Friday April 13th....looking back

A Friday April the 13th is upon us....cannot say anything bad about it...youngest son Hal was born back in 1984 on a Friday the 13th...which happened to be his Grandmother, my Mom's 60th BD...so as Hal turns 28 today, Mom turns 88...

Speaking of that date, it was the day that Pete Rose, wearing a Montreal Expo uniform, not a Reds or Phillies, got his number 4000 hit....he would break the record in a Reds uniform some 17 months later in Cincinnati.

An early riser.....

I have been up since 2:30 or so this morning....old Reagan had issues through the night, and once I took care of the aging Airedale, entering her last days, I tried, but failed, to get back to sleep....fruitless it was, and I got back out of bed, showered and ate an early breakfast...at 4:30am.  It will be a long day as I am not much for naps.  This afternoon I am back to Van Wert for the second straight day, as VW takes on Kenton, in a WBL match up.  Last night, the host Cougars, beat perennial power Coldwater 12-1 in five innings....probably one of the few times the Cavs have been run ruled in many years...I certainly cannot recall the last time that happened.  Tomorrow, if the predicted rains stay away, I have a single game at Crestview at 2pm...a late start due to SAT or ACT Tests in the state.

Last nights contest did see me work my third straight game behind the plate....and it seems that I am getting much more comfortable with the new helmet mask and extra protection it affords me, after the recent Carotid Surgery....the worst wound so far this season, in my five games behind the plate, was on Tuesday night, when I took a fastball off the catcher's glove on my left wrist....that still is swollen, but not broken.

Lake Photography....

With the early rise, I did get out and snap a few photos around the lake....much of it was the same old stuff, making me think that I have to find a few new spots come this summer to shoot photos in and around Grand Lake....some of this mornings are attached on today's blog.

We are still watching Hal and Lisa's pups.....they will pick them up on Sunday, as for Reagan, if she survives until then, I will have to make a painful decision soon thereafter.....she cannot go on like this.  She doesn't appear to be in pain, but she is losing her functions and not eating much.

enjoy your weekend.....back later>>>>

Romney Wins By a Razor Thin Margin.....and Another Beer Find, Fine Beer

March is proving the old adage, "March Winds"....we will see if they bring "April Showers"...hopefully not too many.   April is my main baseball umpiring month of the year...although at this point, depending on the results of my appointment with the Cardio Doc tomorrow, that remains to be seen for this Spring.

Yesterday, after finishing my errands, which included Voting, driving to St Marys to pick up a CD of my CAT Scan, then to New Bremen for a CD of my Echo on the arteries...technology is an amazing thing these days....not necessarily for the better, but amazing none-the-less.

After picking up the medical CDs for tomorrow's visit to the Lima Cardio Group, I dropped by the Animal Clinic/Pet Center and made an appointment for Reagan the aging Airedale, for this weekend, as Patricia and I head to Wright Patterson in Fairborn for another "Mini Reunion" of Air Force/Vietnam Sky Cops on Friday...that's if all goes good tomorrow, and I won't have to have the procedure scheduled until next week or later.  Once done there is was off to Wally World for a few items, then on to the Driver's License Bureau, where I renewed my license for another four years.  The lady at the desk, looks at me and asks.."Still Riding Motorcycles"?  I reply, "No, but I still like having it on my license, just in case I get the burr, and decide to ride into the sunset".  So the M/C Endorsement is still there, although I have not been on a bike in more than 20 years....and sadly, have no plans on climbing back aboard anytime soon.

I finished off the afternoon by walking uptown to the post office and back...a solid 40 minute walk, I refuse to sit any longer waiting on the appointments, and whatever may come, to catch up with me.....

Romney Squeaks One Out_____

Super Tuesday proved at least two things....The GOP Race is not over, and whoever the nominee finally becomes, the road to the White House is going to be a rough ride.  Despite the fact that we have a Kenyan born Interloper, illegally in office as President, the media and stupid people are bound and determined to keep this half breed, half witted, Marxist tool, in office.

Here in western Ohio, especially Northwest and West Central parts of the state, Rick Santorum won easily, he did likewise in Southeast Ohio and the north central part of the state....however, around the large cities and bergs, infested by "soccer moms" and males without a pair between their legs, Mitt Romney collected enough votes to squeak out a 12,000 vote win, out of over 1 million, two hundred thousand cast, thus winning the majority of delegates...nationwide it was much the same.  Romney wins 6 states, Santorum 3, and Newt picked up Georgia....Ron Paul, Captain Tin Foil himself, was shut out....the race, while still going on, is Romney's to lose...and despite all his money, robo calls, and "Super Pacs", he has yet to seal, or steal, the deal.

The GOP is in for a nasty fall come November, and the Republic is at the Cross Roads.....if the Republicans cannot take the White House from the Kenyan Marxist...they need at least to capture the Senate and keep the House, otherwise "Game Over".  The only good news on this election night was locally we stomped out another attempt at a "tax increase".

I worked for the Mercer County/Celina City Health Department for 8 years, then moved on as Environmental Health Director at Van Wert County for another 12 before I retired.  I watched in amusement as the local department put up a levy.  Saying they needed the extra money to fund all of their wonderful programs and increase staff....Bullshit!  When I joined the Mercer County department in 1983 as staff Sanitarian, we had a total of 6 full time employees, and a part time Health Commissioner....now, less than 30 years later, they tell us they need more employees and more of our money....they don't, and we don't need most of what they provide...some good programs?  Sure, but having spent much of my working life at the local health department scene, much of what they and the state provide is pure worthless rules, and regulations, not worth enforcing.

The levy was put to rest, for now, by a 66/33 margin, a full 2/3rd of country residents were not buying it...and I know of at least 2 former staff members, me, and my old Environmental Health partner, who helped vote it down.  I'm trying to figure out what the 2500 people who voted for were thinking...they obviously don't pay many taxes, or don't have a clue.

One More Beer to Taste____

With the potential health issues yet to be resolved, there are more than a few things on my plate which I am unable to taste.   On the "piss me off" side of the menu, is the fact that I have put my workout and weight lifting routine on hold...worse yet, I've had to, for the most part, cut out my beer drinking.

Yesterday, after getting my various 'chores' taken care of, Reagan and I took advantage of the warm but windy weather, and I decided to head out to the back yard.  So I went into my basement humidor, grabbed  a 1876 Torpedo Cigar, headed to the refrigerator and pulled a frosted glass out of the freezer, and took one on the new found beers I have stashed, and headed out into the 60 degree, wind blown, sunshine.  The new found beer, which I tasted for the first time last Wednesday at our baseball banquet/meeting in Van Wert, was another in the YuenglingYuengling Bock...in addition to being a tasteful Bock Beer, the cost is right...about $5.75 for a full six pack of long necks.  Compared to some of the other dark brews and micro brews I try, this one is not only good, but cheap!

I ended up pouring two, and finished most of the cigar...sometimes you just gotta do what feels good...and trust me, this did.

Tonight another baseball meeting in Van Wert...then tomorrow, Patricia and I will head to Lima...by tomorrow evening, I should know what awaits me, procedure wise, and when I will have to have it done....back later>>>

Photos-Even in the wind and cool March conditions, Grand Lake produces some fantastic sunrises....I took this one on a recent cold, and partly cloudy morning, in the wind....Romney squeaks out a win in Ohio, but Santorum is still alive in the race...the question is?  Is the GOP dead in the water?  And Yuengling Bock comes to Ohio for the first time, as Spring arrives.

Photos-The Week in Review....February 19th through 25th

The winter winds down, slowly but surely...and my basketball officiating all but came to an end for the season last night.  With the exception of a youth tournament at Parkway High School on March 8th, I am done for the season, and can concentrate on the upcoming baseball season.

The week  began simply enough...I got out of bed early and with the conditions, albeit they being cold, were pretty perfect to snap some sunrise photos on the west and south sides of Grand Lake:

Wednesday saw Garry and I head to Van Wert in the evening for a baseball rules meeting...although only 4 local meetings are required, I usually attend 5 or 6 in Van Wert and one at our other association, down at Indian Lake High School, to stay active in that association....usually working a game or two each season in Shelby County. and Logan County, although things are changing down that way.

Thursday was the highlight of the week...as I traveled south to Centerville, and watch the new {and only} grandchild/grandson, Kasyn, the "K-Man" for the day....

Last night to the Fieldhouse to work my final high school game of the season...which will continue into late March, with the State Championships in Columbus...

Frankly, I am happy the season is finished for me....of the three sports I officiate/umpire...basketball is the most demanding on this aging body, it is also the best cardio workout....on the other hand it is my least favorite and the one of the three that I am least proficient in...at least in my own opinions.  While baseball is my favorite, the one I have done the longest, and the one of the three that I have done District, Regional and State work in....and work not only High School, but American Legion, and ACME Summer ball as well.

Today, Saturday, Patricia is in Dayton, at a Autism Seminar, being hosted by daughter-in-law, Lisa....and also getting her chance to spoil/bond with Kasyn....as Anissa and I get ready to head to the grocery, to pick out a few items, including some store fixed Fried Chicken...the rest of the weekend, interrupted only by the opening round of the Wabash Valley Dartball Tournament, will see me do some treadmill work, weight lift tomorrow, and watch some hoops and hockey on the tube.

Being shorthanded for Dartball this weekend, and probably next, it will be a struggle to make the finals, like we have done the past couple of seasons....but you never know.

back later for more on this exciting{insert eye roll} life...

Photos-Some good photos of spectacular sunrises were seen in the early morning this week over Grand Lake, I managed to get these and a couple dozen others...Me and Kasyn giving the digital the "left eye stare" on Thursday, The historic Fieldhouse was the scene of my final high school basketball game of the season last night...We hosted the Dartball Tournament in 09-10 and like last year at Hopewell, we finished in the Runners-Up spot.  Not sure if we will make the finals this time around at Bethany, we have been struggling all season...and with basketball finished up for all intensive purposes, baseball umpiring, and warmer weather beckons.

What a Difference a Day Makes!

Yesterday dawned sunny and cold, a perfect, if not for the cold conditions, day to snap photos along and around the lake....this morning was just the opposite, a bit warmer, but windy, raw, and rain in and around the area.  As you can see, not the best of photo taking mornings.

Last night we finished off our regular Dartball season....winning the first game at Schumm 3-2, then with both teams out of the race for the championship(a rarity for Schumm Lutheran)...we were playing for home runs, etc...and ended up losing the last two contests...4-2, and 3-0.  I finished the season at .380 and just 10 RBIs...still good enough for the top five in league batting average, and making my 15th straight all star game.  The tournament playoffs begin next Sunday at Bethany...if we can get hot at the right time, we can make a championship run like last year, if not, the all star game and banquet will be all that remains for this season.

Patricia, done with the 4 day President's Day holiday, is back at school....and my routine is back to "normal"....well as normal as it gets these days.  No games until Friday, but I do have a baseball rules meeting tomorrow at Van Wert, then Thursday, I make the drive to Centerville, to spend the day sitting with "The K-man"...Kasyn, the Grandson....this time at the Condo, while Lisa works at her office, and Hal works from the home office{computer}....

Friday my final high school basketball game of the season, a JV/Western Buckeye League game here in Celina vs league rival Bath....this is the last weekend of boys action, with the tournament starting next week.  Next week I have a couple of appointments, one back at the Cardio Doc for a Echo Test, then the following day, March 1st at the Hospital for a Diabetes check up....although I feel fine, and appear in great shape for my age, approaching 63 next month, the past few weeks, have signaled some possible health issues, although frankly I really don't believe that there is anything serious going on....time and tests will tell.

The following weekend, March 9th through 11th will have us attend another Vietnam Reunion, this one, that I have arranged, a "mini" reunion at Dayton and Wright Patterson, will have a few old "Sky Cops" from the VSPA {Vietnam Security Police Association} gather with wives at the Hope Hotel for a couple of days at the Air Force Museum and a few hours of telling 'war stories'.

Turner Movie Classics_____

I am not a fan of Ted Turner....he is frankly a nutjob, a wacko, and a conniving Marxist tool....add to that the fact that he wed Hanoi Jane, the Traitor of American Troops during "my war"...is more that enough to despise his very presence.

However the one thing he has done right, is Television...beginning with "The Super Station" WTBS...the was followed by other "Cable Only" stations, and the best, without a doubt, in my opinion, is TMC.   A combination of old and mostly classic movies from yesteryear.  I also enjoy the shoot off web site...especially the old radio programs that have been placed online.  The mystery genre have always been my favorite, especially The Whistler, Suspense, The Shadow, and Escape....in addition I like many of comedies, including Jack Benny, and Bob Hope.

I can pick these up on my XM Radio Classics channel, as well as online on the TMC website.  They certainly take you back in time....not necessarily a better time, but certainly more interesting that the cyber/high tech world of today.  The years, basically 1939 through 1950, with a handful of years on either side, were without a doubt the Golden Age of Radio, and the age of innocence in America.  Thanks to Ted Turner, for all of his faults,  for bringing this age back to life.

Photos-Today Grand Lake looked my different than the sun filled morning of yesrterday....and the Whistler and other old time radio shows are one of the staples on the Turner Classic Movie/Radio Library.

2 {Winter} Months Down, Just One {Winter} Month to Go.....

Much of the weekend, especially yesterday {Sunday} felt like winter....not that is was bitter cold, but there was a stiff breeze from the north with temperatures failing to move beyond the low 30s.  After working the JV boys game at Van Wert on Friday night, the rest of the weekend was pretty much a relaxing time.  I watched a little basketball, Duke wins on Sunday, while Ohio State lost at hated Michigan, or "scUM" as we call that school around these parts, on Saturday Night at Ann Arbor.  Yesterday was Hockey Day in America, as coined on NBC, as they try to get their hockey ratings up.  I love Hockey, but despise NBC, so while I want more NHL games on non-pay television, I would rather not have NBC, the Obama butt kissing, biased, network succeed at anything.

Winter Sunrise on Grand Lake_____

Today being the Holiday of President's Day. leaves us with just one official month of winter left...2 down 1 to go....and although it has been a mostly snowless and mild winter by all accounts, I am tired of it.  I do not enjoy rising on a cold winter day and venturing outside...those are the simple facts.

However yesterday I pondered that if the skies would dawn clear that I would get up and head out to a couple of spots on the lake, that I usually reserve for shooting photos only in the warm summer months.  So I headed to bed early and arose some 10 hours later....only interrupted by the now nearing 14 year old Airedale, Reagan, as she decided at least three times during the night to wake me, needing to relieve herself....of course as I age, I usually get up that many times during the night anyway...so what the Hell?

Patricia got out of bed shortly after 6am, and I soon followed.  As she headed out to the fitness center on the other side of Celina, I warmed up the van, grabbed the camera and a cup of coffee....then headed out and scraped the ice off the windows on the Montana.  The temperature was reading just at the 20 degree mark, as I entered the gloam, and drove towards Windy Point.

When I arrived on the southwest side of the lake, the sun had not yet risen above the eastern shoreline, some 10 miles across Grand Lake.  I snapped a few photos of the ice and snow that was sticking to the rocks and low lying tree limbs that covered the shores around the jetty known as Windy Point.  I took perhaps 15 photos, and jumped back in the van, hopeful that I could arrive back at West Bank Road, before the Sun popped....I arrived just a minute or two after the Ol' Sol had risen...the results of this morning's photos are in capsule on this site this morning.

I still hate the morning winter weather....but the fact that it is nearing the end makes it bearable, sure there will be another 2 or three months of cool or cold conditions in the early mornings....howeverf, the end of winter and the beginning of several months of better conditions beckons.

Tonight I head for Schumm for the final Dartball regular season contest, that will be followed by the tournament beginning next Sunday and the All-Star Game, Monday, March 12th, and Banquet, March 19th...the season will finisher  for another 7 months or so.

back later>>>>

Photos-A cold February morning on Grand Lake, mostly ice free this year...with the exception of some Ice and lingering snow along the rocks and weeds that surround the shoreline.

The Weekend....back to back to back...

A bit of snow early Saturday morning left the roads, at least the back ones, slippery, on my way to Wayne Trace for the 7th grade boys basketball tournament up in Paulding County....by the time I headed home at 1 pm, the sun was out, and the winds were blowing...most of the snow gone with it...only to return yesterday afternoon, as another small 'Clipper' came calling.  That was pretty much the way of the weekend.  A mix of sun, clouds, wind, and small amounts of snow arriving at various times on both Saturday and Sunday.

I was more concerned about my back as I headed to Spencerville on Friday night....it was still acting up, and sitting made it worse, at least by the time I would get out of a sitting position....didn't seem to matter whether the chair was soft, hard, or even the Nitro seats....which I chose to drive over the van, mainly because of the better headlights, and not so much the four wheel drive.

As I stiffly got out of the car and walked slowly into the Spencerville High School, I wasn't sure how the night would go, back wise.  I wasn't really worried about the game performance, I was more concerned about my back....and whether this would be the beginning of the fall of 2007 all over.  I needed not worry, and least on Friday, or for that matter, the double header on Saturday....the more I moved, the better the back felt...the less I walked or trotted up and down the floors, the more it hurt, so moving was good....and it was to be that way for the rest of the weekend...Sitting or standing, not so good, moving, walking, not so bad.  With back problems you never know what they will bring.

If you've never had back issues, you probably cannot understand, or relate to the issues they bring.  Trust me, there may be people who fake back injuries to collect some sort of perverted reward they might perceive they need or deserve, but if you've ever had major ones, you would know it's no laughing matter.  As for me, I am waiting to see how this round of back pain, one of many over the past 30 years, pans out.  Over the years I have avoided surgery, but with two epidural injections and a hundred trips or more to the Chiropractor, I have had my share of pain in the back, which becomes over time a pain in the ass.

Roundball Slow Down_____

The good thing, if there can be one, with this round of back pain, is that my basketball schedule is slowing down, with just 10 more dates on my calender...sure I might add a day or two, but for the most part, I can see the light at the end of that tunnel, which began with scrimmages in mid November.  Hopefully as the roundball seasons winds down, and baseball looms ahead, my back issues can either clear themselves up, or I can at least have time to use any options I need to get them corrected or resolved enough to move on.

This week I have just three dates to cover....a Junior Varsity Girls match-up at Spencerville tomorrow, followed by the same at Elida on Thursday, and a boys JV game at Antwerp on Saturday night.

Meanwhile the weather, after a cold start today, will look spring-like for the next few days, with temperatures reaching the upper 50s for tomorrow afternoon, before they start back sliding towards more winter like temperatures and conditions over the weekend.

back later>>>>

Photos-my usual breakfast, along with a banana, has helped me drop most of the 10 pounds I gained over the Holidays...after losing 30 pounds since the fall of 2009, I slipped up and gained a couple of handfuls back this season, but have no reversed that back down to the 190 range...another 5 or 10 to go and I will be ready for baseball umpire work, as my basketball officiating schedule winds down.  Beer tasting was about, other than nursing the back and basketball officiating was what most of the weekend consisted of....and mild winter or not, I am looking forward to watching morning sunrises, like this one, last August as I looked out over Grand Lake...

Foggy Morning on Grand Lake....

Just a quicky....

For the next two nights I go back to officiating Girls Junior High double headers...tonight at Lima Perry, and tomorrow back to Lima, at Central Catholic.  After that, with the rare exception, maybe a night or two, I am done with girls JH for the season....although I will still work several JV girls games as league action kicks off over the holidays.

This morning, I awoke, and walked through the chill and drizzle from the overnight rains....first through the neighborhoods, then heading to the bank, the Marathon station for $5 worth of Ohio Lottery Tickets.  I seldom play, except on occasion the daily rolling cash draw, where last week I got a $12 return on my $5 dollar investment.  Enough perhaps for a 6-pack of beer.  After that stop I headed with camera over to the shelter house on the northwest corner of Grand Lake....some loose ice had gathered and was being washed back and forth by the southerly winds and waves....I snapped a few photos, and then headed back to the house.

Patricia has fixed her annual allotment of Christmas Cookies...I had some for Mike and Mom, as well as a homemade Cheese Cake that she had made for Mike, as my older, and only brother, turns the big 65 tomorrow.....

That's if for today's posting....gotta get stuff around before heading to Perry....but I will be back later>>>>

photos-Loose Ice and Fog were the name of the game around Grand Lake early today...

Native American Summer.....got cha!/Political Correctness gone Amuck!

Thought I'd start out today's blog with my first Political Correct headline of November....

Anyway, today is supposed to be somewhat like "Indian Summer"...65 for a high, under sunny skies, light winds and dry conditions...tomorrow will see things cool off and maybe rain in the afternoon, however the weekend ahead looks sunny and pleasant.

I did get up fairly early{for me} this morning, and drove out to the lake to get some sunrise photos...nothing special, but with the clear skies, the fall sunrise was, while not spectacular, pretty decent...some of those photos are included on today's blog with descriptions at the end of same.

The yapping left and the paranoid right______

If you've been reading this blog long, you pretty well know I despise Liberals, especially left wing political types, but for the most part, Liberals in general are not worth my time.  They do have one thing going for them however, that being the ability to stifle free speech from their opponents.  Whether it is calling the right side racists, bigots, homophobes, hate mongers, members of the Nazi Party, etc...they know how to shut much of the other side up....of course with the willing help of the media, it becomes easier to shut down your opponents freedom of speech.  That is unless you are some old horse's ass like me, who really doesn't give a rat's ass what you think or what those to gutless to speak out think.

Witness the latest little gem from the left....and the cowering in the corner from the so-called Right.  A branch of the Virginia GOP sent out a brochure with the likeness of our Kenyan asshole of a President on it...well sort of a likeness.  It was Obammy looking much like a Zombie on the TV show, "The Walking Dead"  complete with skin falling off, and bullet hole, or a ass hole on his forehead, where his brains seeped out long ago.  The left jumped on that like stink on a Monkey.....crying foul {and what could be more "fowl" than the Kenyan and his supporters?}  Saying this was like wishing Obammy dead....well Hell, after all, the clown is already brain dead, as are his supporters, so what's the problem?  Anyway, here is the little fun with Obammy likeness that is causing all the stir:

Again, what's the big deal?  Unless we want to destroy free speech and expression, like the have in Canada and Europe.

My plans, when done here, are to lift some weights, take my daily walk, a half hour or 40 minutes uptown via the post office and back....then?  Who knows?  I might just sit outback with the dog, and relax in the sun....who says retirement has to be boring?  Tonight I will take in my first local basketball meeting of the year at Van Wert....the scrimmage season for me, is just 13 days away, and I plan on enjoying those 13 days.

back later>>>>

Photos-A Gull flies over the shoreline of Grand Lake this morning, just as the Sun begins it's ascent about the eastern shore, so 10 miles away...The second photo showing that the usually smooth waters on the west side of the lake, where a bit choppy as the sun was rising.  The offending Obammy portrait...which really isn't at all....and finally from the state park down West Bank Road, the before sunrise travels of various commercial jets left their marks.

Back to Normal....after the Reunions, Bonding, and Sunshine!

The Daily Routine, the weather, whatever, things appear to be sliding back into the normal realm, for the semi-retired.

The VSPA Reunion in Dayton is but photographs and memories, as is the Kokomo Vietnam Vet Reunion. The 10 straight days of outstanding weather, with temperatures running from the low 70s to low 80s, without a cloud in the sky, are also coming to and end.  High School Football, while the playoff season will stretch into December, is winding down, as the regular season has but 3 weeks to go...time flies this time of the year, but it will surely drag come winter.  As for me, today at least, is a day of rest....

After two straight days of football officiating, I get today off...I lifted weights and mowed mom's yard yesterday, so today, I can drop those off the agenda as well.  My lawn will need one more mowing at least, sometime this week, but for today, other than a good long walk, perhaps uptown or to the fairground, rather than the treadmill is probably in the works.  My desk is a cluttered mess of ball caps, pins, and other memorabilia from the VSPA get-together, so I will clear that off, and perhaps, if the sun appears, get some final photos of the leaves turning around Grand Lake, before they are gone until next May...but in general, the agenda is free and clear.  I believe Patricia told me she would be at school late, so I'll fix a late supper of Rib Eye Steaks, Baked Potatoes and some Green Beans...and that will be my day.

I have sorted through and sent out some of the photos from last week at Dayton...the collection is not as varied in number or quality as I would have liked...but some of that comes from me not being used to the indoor functions on the Nikon, and from the folks I gave it to to take photos, only doing what I showed them...thus, despite some great outdoor shots, the indoor photos left something to be desired.  I do have some requests out however, and expect Al, Tony, and Harry, my Nha Trang cohorts to feed me some good quality shots, in the next days and weeks....

So we head towards the late fall and early winter...my football will end in a few weeks, then basketball beckons.  I've got a State Meeting to attend on-line, I may do that today, then again, I might not...the Van Wert Rules Meetings for roundball begin October 26th, then my first scrimmage comes sometime in mid November.  After the banquet circuit, I hope to lose the 8 to 10 pounds I have gained since last season, before the tip off of the 2011-12 basketball campaign.   Sure I'm still down 25 or so from the Summer of 2009, but want the basketball outfits to fit nice and loose.

First though I finish up football....and although being off tonight, tomorrow I work a game under the lights at Spencerville...a JH game, and it appears the rains may have an effect on that one.  The weather and time will tell...

Speaking of sports...oldest son Sam, majoring in Actuarial Science, continues to work for the Big Ten Network and OSU.Com....yesterday he was working the color for the OSU/Northwestern Men's Soccer game...after all the years broadcasting I never worked a nationally televised game on TV or Radio...  here Sam has already worked a few national games, plus got a Big Ten Award last season for Student Production.  Not sure what he plans on doing after he graduates from Ohio State next spring, but with the Act-Science degree and broadcasting as a side lite, he has a couple of options.

back later....

Photos-The sun over Grand Lake, having shown for the past 10 days or so, is covered with clouds.  My Antique desk is a cluttered mess of Reunion Memorabilia....back to English Muffins with my morning coffee, now poured into my new Nha Trang 14thSPS Mug, purchased at the reunion...Basketball is just around the corner....seems like football just kicked off yesterday.  And finally Sam's award from last season at the Big Ten Network, for Sports Direction/Production....

Labor Day Weekend, the Hot and Cold of It...

After reaching near triple digits on Friday and Saturday, for record highs in West Central Ohio, the cool down began yesterday, and today it is in full swing, with temperatures, predicted for the mid 60s, but as of 3pm unlikely to make it out of the upper 50s....it is 58 as I type.

Friday was brutal...after she was done at school, Patricia and I headed to some friends house north of Celina and spent a couple of hours picking pears...and working up a sweat.  She has spent most of the weekend canning pears and pear preserves for the winter...more on that with tomorrow's blog.

On Saturday morning, by the time I headed for the stadium, the air was hardly moving...so despite a 10am start...the conditions were not good for football.  As it turned out, we got the Freshman game between Celina and O-G out of the way, although a couple of kids had heat exhaustion and were dismissed to the shady areas of Celina Stadium...we finished the 22-16 Ottawa win before Noon, and we were glad it was done.

Meanwhile Sam was working the Ohio State vs Akron game...but was doing video directing and managed to stay out of the on field heat, as he worked the press box in the Buckeye 42-0 season opening win.  During the early part of that game, I saw the head Referee go down with heat exhaustion and never come back in...the conditions were indeed brutal.  The places that didn't get rain were steamy, while many locations in the Midwest, like the Notre Dame and Michigan games were either delayed or stopped/ended by heavy rain storms and strong lightning.

Saturday night some storms came through our area, and with it the cooler weather arrived....and both the rain and downturn in temperatures was welcome....

Our old buddy Tom is staying at Nick's place, after work at the horse farm in Deshler slowed....so Tom will take some time off before heading to Florida later this fall.  Yesterday Tom and I headed over to Nick's, downed a few beers and grilled fresh sweet corn picked from Nick's garden....I'm not a great sweet corn fan, but this is the way I like it when I do partake...Tom meanwhile downed at least 10 ears....can't imagine what that would do to my system, especially washing it down with multiple beers.

So Tom will be around for awhile hanging out on the south side of Grand Lake....

After we were done grilling the corn and picking melons, etc in the garden, I called Patricia to pick me up.  After months of getting up and taking Sunrise photos at Windy Point, this time I had the camera and talked her into driving down Windy Point Road, where I could get some Sunsets photos from the same area....the cool breeze parted the clouds just enough for some decent Sunset photos looking west across the lake.

This promises to be a busy football week....

Tomorrow I have a youth league game here in Celina, Thursday a Junior High Double header at St Henry, then Friday I will be filling in for a MAC Varsity game as St Henry travels to Parkway.  Frankly though, I am not sure even what position I will be working, although my guess is it will be one of the "wing" positions on the sidelines.  On Saturday I head for Convoy Crestview for a JV game at 10am.  Sunday Patricia and I head to Centerville....the women will be having a baby shower for Hal's wife Lisa, while the guys, 8 or so friends of Hal's and men from both families will be golfing...I should be the worst of those participating...but what the Hell?  I'll give it another shot...since I played fairly well back in July.

That's the Holiday weekend and a look ahead in a nutshell....

back later>>>>

Photos-A couple of "Sunset" photos from Windy Point on Grand Lake...a change of pace from my usual morning shots....and Tom downing probably his 10th ear of sweet corn out of Nick's garden, and when done there Left to Right, Tom, Nick, and PRH, enjoy a couple of Great Lake Brews...

Welcome to my Heat Wave.....

When I awoke at 5am or so it was still at 75 degrees and it was not going to drop, as west central Ohio heads for 98 today....breaking any records for this late in the year....tomorrow won't be much better.  Not going to be a good night for Varsity Football either, especially teams that have many players going both ways, on both offense and defense.  Probably going to be a night where the subs get some playing time at many schools.  Tomorrow morning, I luck out, our Freshman game at Celina begins at 10am, so we should be done before the real skin cooker weather begins.  Meanwhile Sam is working the Ohio State/Akron game, and even on the natural field, it's gonna be hot in Columbus by the time that one ends....98 today, 96 tomorrow, and then storms and cooler for the end of the Holiday week ahead, including Labor Day, which they say will barley reach about 70....that's more like it

This morning I was up early again, not sure if it's the Zocor, or just one of those nights that I couldn't stay asleep...but I took the opportunity to go on another early rise photo shoot.   With the haze it did not appear that I would get anything worthwhile while trying to get the sun coming up over the lighthouse at the intersection of 127 and Lakeshore Drive in Celina.   So after a few photos and a walk, I decided to just head towards Montezuma and Windy Point and enjoy the morning, before the heat got to be too much.

As I turned on 219 towards the point, I looked and the Sun was coming up a huge orange ball..."Damn" I think to myself, a wasted opportunity, as I could have taken a few shots of the lighthouse with the sun in the background....as it was I continued towards Windy Point, where I got some decent photos, but most I have seen before, I missed the opportunity to get what I wanted, The lighthouse in the rising sun...maybe next week sometime.

Despite the heat on tap for today, I have a few things I need to get done....the back yard needs mowed, that will take just 15 minutes, the rest of the yard is good to go for the weekend.  The van, which I am back driving since the Nitro is fixed(we hope), needs an oil change...heading for Wolfe's Tire for than at 11am....and then a wash and vaccum for the Montana.  Hope to lift some weights and do the treadmill....then kick back in the A/C and relax.

No big plans coming up for the Labor Day weekend, but remainder of the month and October, I do have a full plate on the table....

back later>>>>

Photos-A couple more Sunrise shots from Windy Point on Grand Lake this morning...I had hoped to get the sun coming up over the Lighthouse in Celina, but misjudged the effect of the haze, and missed out on that opportunity....and Norman Rockwell salute to Amateur Football is almost as old as me...from the Cover of the Saturday Evening Post on October 21, 1950....celebrating the "Kickoff" of a the three major football draws coming together this week...High School, College, and the NFL....

Another Grand, Grand Lake Morning

Woke up about 6:15 this morning, Patricia was already out at the fitness center working out....getting up at 4:45 in the morning, she then heads for an hour workout before heading off to teach at St. Henry...gotta give her credit.  I work out, but morning has never been my workout time.  I tried it for awhile about 20 years ago, at the old Lake Front Racquet Club, but quickly figured out, that was not my time of the day to pump iron, or hit the treadmill.  The fact is, since I got into a regular workout routine, some 35 years ago...most of my workouts, whether running, walking, or weight training, were at night.  I remember when I was a student at Wright State University-Lake Campus, I was making ends meet by bartending at "Fats Stag Bar" in downtown Celina.   I would close up the place at 10 at night, and head out towards home on Brandon Avenue(only 3 doors from where we live now), and then run/jog around the Fairgrounds for 3 miles, before settling in front of our small black and white TV, and downing a few Mountain Dews....that's been 35 years ago, but those images are still strong in my mind.

Regardless, I am not a morning workout person....and these days, most of my weight lifting and treadmill work are done in the early afternoon hours....yesterday the weights got done, but the treadmill was replaced by mowing mom's yard...a good 45 minutes walking behind the Toro.

This morning, as I said, I did manage to get up....Patricia was pulling into the drive from her workout as I was pulling out of the garage, in her Nitro.  The Dodge got the factory replacement module put in yesterday, and seems to be driving without the worry of the alarm system going haywire...but Patricia is still a little apprehensive about driving it to school, so she is using the van and I get the Nitro for at least this week.

With camera and coffee in hand, I headed out to the lake for the first morning photo session in over a month....the morning was crisp, cool(about 52 degrees), with a breeze, and clear as a bell.   The sun would rise almost an hour later(about 7:05) than in my early July photo shoots, and it would also rise some 40 degrees to the east, rather that the northeast rise that was the norm earlier in the summer.  The southeast breeze brought thoughts of the coming autumn in my mind, until I looked at the extended forecast...93 for a high Thursday, with 92 on Friday.  It's gonna be hot for football this week!

The photo shoot session started out about 6:40 on West Bank Road, where I got some of the shots you see today, including the silhouette of me in the early morning dim.  I then climbed back into the 4WD and drove the 3 miles south to Windy Point, to catch the actual sunrise.

Windy Point is where I spent many hours during my high school days.  We would fish for panfish, mainly Crappies and Perch, from those 3/4 miles of stone and rocks as they jet out into Grand Lake.  We also swam at the beach, drank beer, and partook in a few more activities, whether they be in daylight or darkness.  These days, even in the summer, Windy Point is usually deserted, except for the waterfowl, and other birds that hang around...nary a soul as I arrived at 7am, some five minutes before the actual sunrise would occur.

Regardless of how many times I sit or walk Windy Point, it always takes me back to those high school days, when I first began to drive....me and the Jones boys spent a lot of our off hours at Windy Point, both in the Summer and the school year.  Later on, I would take our first two Airedales, Rag and Max, out there for a swim....life seems now more complicated than it did in those days, but I am guessing it's not, hindsight always looks better from afar, and our memories are softened by time.

No games tonight, nothing until Thursday on the field, but will head to Van Wert for another rules meeting tonight.

Made our motel reservation for the October VSPA Reunion at Fairborn/Dayton yesterday, but only set aside a room for that first Wednesday....we will take in most of the activities, but not sure how many days we will stay overnight at the actual meeting place, the I-675 Holiday Inn in Fairborn, still time to add a day or two later.

Will finish up this blog post, then decide what the rest of the day will bring, until Garry and I head to Van Wert about 6:15 tonight...back later>>>>

Photos{as always, double click for large view}-Some 20 minutes before Sunrise, I silhouetted myself looking out towards Safety Island a couple miles out into Grand Lake.  The Dodge Nitro complete with new electronic module, made in Mexico like the faulty one I am sure, sits in the morning sun at Windy Point.  The 7:05 sunrise looking out from Windy Point....looking south I head back to the parking lot, after walking most of the way out to the point....and a long dead log lays among the stones, rocks, and rip-rap, as a lone Mallard Duck swims away, thinking I was to close for comfort.

Cubans....Where are the "Cubans"?

Well Hell, it's been 5 months, so figured I'd let myself and anybody that may stop by these days, that I was still alive and kicki...
