Play Ball!!! Let the season begin....

Sunny, windy, and cold over the weekend, typical late March weather.  Temps in the upper 30s, lows near 20, and a bite to the air.  The week ahead, the first of the high school baseball season in Ohio, looks much the same.  High in the low 40s...some snow by Wednesday, and a mixed bag for Friday....the first week of the season usually goes something like this, lots of cancellations, and a mixed bag of conditions.  This season?  Time will tell.

Tonight I have on the schedule a Junior Varsity contest...of the 45 on my docket, only 4 are non varsity, today being one, with this Saturday a JV double header here in Celina...after that, all but one, a JV game in Celina April 15th, will be Varsity contests....how many the rain and cold will knock out, is always a crap shoot.  I prefer few cancellations, but getting anything above 65% in is a good spring.  I already received a tournament assignment, today being the first day those are allowed to be handed out.  A double header Sectional D4 request at Crestview on May 7th...a place where I have done many a game over the last decade plus.  The District, Regional, and State assignments will be handed out later...not sure what, if any I get, but regardless, I am looking forward to baseball season...by far the favorite of the three sports I officiate, just like it was my favorite to play and coach.

Hockey and Basketball Final Four Set____

The NCAA Final Four was decided in both basketball and hockey over the weekend...the basketball, needless to say, was a bracket busting weekend.  Duke, Kansas, and Ohio State, all joined Pittsburgh, as Number 1 seeds on the sidelines....Butler a 8, Virginia Commonwealth an 11(tying for the lowest seed ever), Kentucky a four, and UConn a 3, made the show, with nary a one or two seed getting to the dance.  Go Butler!

Meanwhile Hockey's Frozen Four were decided in a busy weekend...Miami Ohio, with Celina's Cody Riechard in goal, were ousted by New Hampshire.  Cody had a great game, making 31 of 33 saves, but the Redhawks, a number 1 seed, could provide him no offense in a 3-1 loss(the final goal coming with a empty net).  New Hampshire was ousted by Notre Dame last night to set the final 4 with two teams each from the CCHA and WHA.   Michigan, joins the Irish, Minnesota Duluth, and North Dakota in the finals at St. Paul in 10 days....Go "Fighting Sioux".  The NCAA hates the Sioux, because of the nickname.  The "bean counters" have been trying to blackmail North Dakota into dropping the nickname, and it appeared successful until last week when the North Dakota Governor, House and Senate, passed a law deeming that the nickname will stay.  Expect a court fight from the politically correct assclowns in the NCAA.

Go North Dakota!

So the last week of March begins....by the end of this one, it will be April, and Spring, with the snow, rain, sun, wind, warm and cold, will have began in full....get out and enjoy!

back later>>>>

Photos-top left...Baseball begins, that is me, about 25 pounds heavier, and a couple of years younger, working the plate....Hockey's Frozen Four kicks off in St. Paul on April 7th. Celina's Cody Riechard in goal for Miami...and The Fighting Sioux...The team logo and name the PC Brigade at the NCAA hates...screw those asshats...Go Fighting Sioux!

Officiating, When Things Turn Ugly

As I begin this morning, I look up and see a message from host "Blogger" that "image uploads will be disabled for two hours due to maintenance at 5:00PM PDT tonight"...that would be 8PM for us in the Eastern Zone....probably a good thing, the image options have been a pain the ass for about 2 weeks of late, and I was wondering what was up...it appears I wasn't the only one having problems...what was usually a hour each morning that I posted, had become two hours, and I was getting perturbed to say the least...way too much time on the Internet for me.

This afternoon, I am off to Marion, Ohio, to hook up with my old friend Bill Clem...we will then head to Waldo, a few miles south, eat supper at the G&R Tavern, home of the World's Best Bologna Sandwiches(don't think store bought baloney)...then head another 25 miles south to Columbus to take in a Blue Jackets Hockey game...it's going to be well after Midnight by the time my head hits the pillow back in Celina.  The weather looks perfect...70 and sunny for today, it doesn't get any better than that.

Officiating, sometimes you wonder why?

I have umpired and officiated thousands of games over the past dozen or so years...I can count on one hand the number of times that I or one of my partners have been confronted following a game...it's never gotten physical so far...last night, for a brief moment, I thought all that was going to change.  {I will leave names and locations out of the remainder of the story, because frankly I'm not positive this has been totally settled but things are moving along}

On last night's occasion we had a 3 man crew doing a area 8th grade Junior High football game...and both teams were pretty good...long passes, big runs, and in general good offensives had us 3 in motion much of the game.  3 veteran officials, 2 of us who also had coached for many years, working a game where 22 young me were up and down the field...the game was close throughout, with neither team ever being ahead by more than 6 points.  We had called a handful of penalties, and of course both sides though we should have called more on the other team, especially the fans for the Blue Team, those folks were especially vocal.

The Green Team(Home) scores on a 40 yard play for a 4th down and 8 yards to go, with 1 minute and 6 seconds on the clock to take a 32-28...the points after touchdown fail, so Blue has a little over a minute and 3 time outs to work with.  A long tipped pass, gets Blue down to the 23 of the Green, and still 40 seconds to go...the Blue fans, most sitting between the 40 yard lines begin to move north towards the end zone they hope will see a score for their team.  With the ball on the 23 a pass is thrown towards the sidelines...a big offensive lineman in front of me holds and takes down a Green defender, I throw a flag, one of my partners tosses another  for a block in the back...Green takes the hold, and this moves the ball back to the 33....fast forward to the next play, and pass is intercepted by Green on their own 3 yard line.  This should end the game, Blue has just 2 time outs to work with.  Green takes a knee, Blue calls a time out...18 seconds remain...next play Blue tries to take a knee but the snap if fumbled and Blue recovers on about the 2 yard line...they have one time out and 12 seconds to work with.   This is where it gets interesting.....

Blue saves their last time out, since the clock is stopped for alternating possessions.  Blue runs off the left tackle, the runner is stopped at the 2 yard line...but I see an obvious hold on #86 of the Blue, and toss the flag...much to the displeasure of the Blue fans...in my opinion the hold was so wide open, I had no choice to call it...in retrospect, since the kid didn't score, maybe I should have let it go...but a hold it was....a time out and a play later Blue is back on the 4 yard line with 4 seconds to go...one final play coming up.

The Blue fans by this time are incensed.....a final dive towards the goal line, I watch my linejudge hold is spot...that spot is about a foot short of the goal line, game over, Green wins 32-28.  I knew that this was not going to set well with the Blue fans, although their coaches, did not complain, at least to us.  Gary, my linejudge calls Jim, the linesman and me over to the Green sidelines and tells us we need to stick around and leave together...as he noted, one fan in particular was having a big problem in the stands, both with his spot, and my final holding call....and that fan said he would see us after the game...as we walk off, there he was with about a dozen of his fellow Blue fans...on the field in the End Zone no less.

Now, I've been to war, I've been a Military Cop, I've been a bouncer, and I learned how to fight over the years...I might be 61, but I'm in pretty damn good shape for my age, haven't been in a fist fight for 35 years(since my managing the Red Door days), and wasn't planning on one with some irate fans...but you never know what will happen, and you better damn well be prepared for anything.

Hoodie Sweatshirt approaches, and begins his verbal assault.  "You cost our kids the game, that holding call was Bullshit, you're an asshole", etc, etc, etc,  Other fans were yelling in less colorful manner...finally as Gary, Jim, and I reach our vehicles, Mr Hoodie is in my face, so far I had not responded, but finally I say..."I've been around these games coaching and officiating for 40 years, I don't need to be told how to officiate"...he comes back, "I don't care, I'm a coach at Blue School and you're an asshole"....BINGO!  I look at him and ask..."You're a coach at this school"?  "And just what is your name"?  Mr Hoodie proceeds to give me his name!!!, That's all I need to proceed with this...a friend of his yells at him "Hoodie, let's go". WOW I think...if this guy is a coach, he's got some explaining to do....he was, and he will...

After getting home, I call the Green Athletic Director and after a few calls back and forth, we know that Mr Hoodie has already contacted the Blue AD...admitting his "mistake"...e-mails back and forth and the process has been set in motion.  How it ends is not my problem, or a major concern...the schools can work that out.

My big concern with the whole mess is...what if instead of 3 older officials in their 40s though 61, you had 2 or 3 young first, second, or third year guys?   Mr Hoodie would have been an intimidation factor...not so much with three old farts like us.  This kind of abuse is a reason we cannot get young guys to stick around the game...for the money($40 for lower level to $65 for Varsity games) you receive, the threats and verbal abuse is not something many young guys will put up with...I know what would have happened if this had been 20 years ago, someone would have been picking themselves off the ground and all Hell would have broken loose....I am much mellower now, and that's why I got back into officiating....but for other than love of the action and the games, I sometimes wonder why?

So that was PRH's exciting evening of activity...I came home, opened up a cold Sam Adams winter brew, took a shower, and watched the Yankees get pounded....Texas takes a 3-1 lead in that series(but never count New York out), while San Francisco, a 3-0 winner over the Phillies, takes a 2-1 lead in the NLCS.

Report on the Hockey Night in Columbus on tomorrow's blog...back later>>>>

PS-I'm sure "Riff Reff" will have something to say about last night on his "Official View" blog...click on Riff on the right side later for that take.

Black Hawks Hoist the Stanley Cup

I finished up the ACME game locally last night about 8:30 and headed home to watch Game #6 of the Stanley Cup Finals.....As I climbed out of the basement shower, the Philadelphia Flyers scored to take 2-1 lead midway in the 2nd Period. Chicago countered with 2 late goals to go in front 3-2.

A late Flyer goal in the final period of regulation tied things up, giving us Philly fans some hope, but the Blackhawks took the cup with a fluke goal, 4 minutes into the Overtime.

As a long time Flyer fan I was disappointed in the outcome, but in reality Chicago deserved to win...a good 6 game series, which saw 4 game, including 2 in OT, decided by 1 goal...one other was by 2(thanks to an empty net goal, otherwise it would have been a 1 goal Flyer win as well)goals...the Flyer Goaltending gave up some weak goals, including the Cup clincher last night on Philadelphia Ice.

Considering the Flyers clinched a playoff spot on the final day of the season, by winning in a shootout....I can't complain about my team winning the East and coming up 2 games short of their first Cup since 1975...Congrats to Chicago on their first Stanley Cup in almost 50 years, and only the 4th in their long history.

Game with Garry at Crestview tonight....and the rains are scheduled to move back in for tomorrow night and the weekend....which could put a damper on the American Legion Tournament this weekend in Ottawa. I've scheduled to do 4 games, 2 each on Saturday and Sunday...time and the incessant rains of late will tell the tale.

The Rains of April

Last night and then again tonight my games were rained out....the rains ended, but we got drenched with over an inch in the overnight, and then cool weather moved in, giving the fields in Anna and elsewhere, no time to dry out.
That moved me to looking back at the blog from last April and the weather that occurred after an early warm spell in March...Bingo! Things are much the same this year....although it has been somewhat warmer. The next few days are predicted to see a warming trend(however, nothing like the past week) and some dry weather, but that appears it will be short lived and things will get cooler and wetter later next week....throw a dart at the weather map and see if it sticks. If the fields dry out, I travel to Allen East tomorrow, then a triple header, JV Style(one of a handful of non Varsity games, mostly on Saturdays, that I have this baseball season), at Van Wert on Saturday, and back at Van Wert again Monday...sometimes the schedule ends up giving you more games at a single location that you would like...this year with Van Wert on my schedule on 5 dates, is one of those. You don't want to be seen at one location more than a couple of time....familiarity can breed contempt, in more ways than one. Most seasons I am alert to taking a team to many times, some years you just miss what's on your schedule, and hope for a couple of rainouts.

Brackets Won!

Not sure if I mentioned that I won a 85 player group in the MAC online NCAA Bracket, when Duke won the Semi-Final to clinch it for me...the fact the Blue Devils won the Championship was icing on the cake.
Before the playoffs had started, Patricia brought me home a couple of brackets from school....today we found out, she had won the top prize. I'm not sure if it was the one I filled out or hers...but regardless, coming in first in 2 brackets, thanks to Duke making a good run, brings a smile and a few bucks our way.....

College Hockey____

This afternoon the NCAA Frozen Four kids off in Detroit. First game it's Wisconsin's Badgers against upstart RIT(Never heard of them until this year), that being Rochester Institute of Technology out of upstate New York. The second game features Boston College against number one ranked Miami of Ohio. Miami's Redhawks have a local kid in Goal...Cody Reichart took the Redhawks to within a minute of the National Championship last year...but gave up 2 goals in the last minute to Boston University(the other Boston team) and lost the championship in a heartbreaker.

Despite sharing the goal tending duties, Reichart was named player of the year in the CCHA this season, and is the hunt for the Hobie Baker Award as college hockey's player of the year....hopefully the Ohio team can bring home the cup this time around.

Politics_____

If you may notice I have not talked much political garbage the past week or so...by design is my response. The political doings in DC and the media have so outraged me of late....I believe it's best I take a break for a few days....no reason letting the anger and frustration get the best of me....the Son of a Bitch in the White House and his lemming like henchman, are not going to change, and all we can do is wait this Marxist Bastard out.....defeat them in 2010 and run his sorry ass out of office in 2012.

No, I'm not done talking politics, but am tired of pissing in the wind while preaching to the choir.....baseball, cigars, and quality beer drinking, is more on the agenda for the month of April and May....as the weather warms, I will get back into the swing of things.

I have mushroom hunts, fishing, time outdoors, and living my life to be concerned with...screw the politicians, since it appears that regardless of party or stripes, the bastards in DC and the various statehouses, are all out for power.

photos-The April rains play havoc with the Spring baseball season in Ohio, nothing new there. The NCAA Basketball Brackets were busted just enough to hand me some bucks...and Celina Native Cody Reichart trys to help Miami's Redhawks bring home the NCAA National Championship this time around, after a runner up spot last season.

Obama's Posse' /Bemidji State and Miami Redhawks

I see our beloved emperor Barry Soetoro Obama and his posse' are heading for Europe...with a gang of 500+ members of his staff, paid for by the US Taxpayer...can you imagine the outrage if Bush had taken along this many staffers on the taxpayer's dime? Of course our current useless Prez named Barry/Barack will get a pass...why not? He plans on bailing out the lapdog media if they fail too. How many of you morons that voted for this SOB are happy with the "change" you're getting? This Marxist clown is destroying the country from within?
And spare me, if you think I will stop calling this evil creature anything other what I have been calling him. Actually I'm being way nice in my mind....I just wonder if Queen Michelle will have her own entourage, separate from Barry? "Let them eat cake" you say Michelle?

All Hell is breaking loose in Washington DC....I wonder if the folks in the heartland, the majority anyway, have a clue that this country is being hijacked by a Chicago street punk, and his Brown Shirted Gang?

Glenn Beck's 912 Project being hacked
___________

Beck reported this morning that his 912 project is being hacked and was shutdown for awhile over the weekend:

http://theglennbeck912project.com/

Click the above link, or you can also click on the snake on my left border, it is the only "real" 912 project...it's free, don't buy into the ones asking for "donations"...they are bogus.

Beck also reports that left wing hackers are trying to shut down the 912 Project, which now has more than 345,000 sign ups....the left wing media, and the Obamanation can't be pleased....you can bet they will do anything, both legal and illegal, to try to discredit the project.
_____

As I mentioned in my rare Sunday post yesterday, the NCAA Hockey Tournament has been superior to the Basketball Tournament in exciting play and close games...yesterday Top Ranked Boston University scored late to defeat New Hampshire. Then the lowest ranked team in the tournament, Bemidji State, knocked off Cornell, to join BU, Miami of Ohio, and Vermont at the Frozen Four in Washington DC, on April 9th and 11th. Miami and Bemidji are #4 seeds, Vermont a #3, and only BU was a #1 seed....remember, nobody is seeded lower than a 4, making this the first Frozen Four with a gaggle of lower ranked teams.

In addition, something I didn't know(or did many others from small town Celina), the starting Goalie from the Miami Redhawks is a kid from our town of 11,000...from a high school, Celina, without organized Hockey...his name is Cody Reichard. Cody just turned 22, and is now, along with his Redhawk teammates, heading for the final 4. It appears(although I don't know the entire story), that Cody honed his goal tending skills at the local Roller Hockey rinks..he previously played at Alaska Fairbanks. I was going to watch the Frozen 4 anyway...now with a local kid, front and center, it is with renewed interest. Vermont will take on BU, and upstarts Miami and Bemidji will face off in the Semi-Finals on April 9th.

Play Ball(Maybe)_________

Today is opening day for the High School Varsity baseball season. I guess I should say, ground conditions permitting. Heavy rains Saturday night were followed by rain, wind, snow, and cold, yesterday...I'm not sure if this morning's sunshine is going to dry off many of the diamonds in west central and northwest Ohio where I ply my umpiring skills. So far though, I've received no cancellation notice for either Sam or me. He is scheduled for a Varsity game at St. Marys against Parkway, while I'm slated to be at the new diamond in Delphos, for a St. Johns vs Wapakoneta game. Tomorrow it is slated to be warmer, before rain moves in tomorrow night, and Garry Mosier and I will be at Wayne Trace against perennial power Defiance....the first week or so of spring baseball is always a crap shoot, if you get half the games in, you have to feel lucky.

The Fox Nation___

I see Fox News has come up with a new web site for Fox fans....this would excluded most of you dumbasses that voted for Obama or support his Socialist and Marxist policies....

Limbaugh and Beck are included in the opening day editorials....

You can go here for the new site:

Photos-Barry Soetoro Obama and his Posse' will be heading to Europe on the taxpayers dime(billions and billions of dimes). Hometown kid Cody Reichard of the Miami Redhawks is heading for the Frozen Four in DC(photo is when Cody was playing for Alaska Fairbanks)...and Chad Billingsley of the LA Dodgers...Chad iS from Defiance, Ohio, and I got to umpire his fast ball a few times during his high school and American Legion career...I am scheduled to ump his former school, tomorrow at Haviland Wayne Trace.

NCAA Hockey/Weekend Update

While most of the sports world is concentrating on the NCAA "March Madness" and the annual basketball tournament...the best games of the post season, for the most part, have been in the annual NCAA Hockey Tournament, leading to the Frozen Final Four in Washington DC(a strange place to play a Hockey Tournament it seems to me) the first full week of April.

Of the 16 teams entered in the tourney, Boston University, Notre Dame, Michigan, and Denver, were ranked #1...after one round, only BU was left, via a 8-3 over our very young(23 Freshman and Sophomores) Ohio State Buckeyes....ND, UM, and Denver, were all dispatched by #4 seeds(the lowest seeds in each bracket), in order, by Bemidji State, The Air Force Academy, and Miami of Ohio. Miami won again last night, over Minnesota at Duluth to qualify for the DC event...where they will be joined by Vermont and the winners of tonight's other regional finals. Boston University, it appears, has the inside track to win it all...but the way this thing is shaking out, anything can happen...with OSU and North Dakota(love them only because they have the balls to tell the NCAA to shove it, when the Nazi governing body tried to force them to give up their nickname, "The Sioux"..told them to stick it, and kept the name) now gone, I'll root for Miami and upstart Bemidji State(if they can win tonight, they would join Miami in making their first Final 4, having just made the Tournament for the first time). Vermont made the final 4 by coming from behind to defeat Air Force last night. Two games have seen tying goals scored with less than 1 second left in regulation, while a win by Cornell(also a #3 Seed) came with 18 seconds left, coming from behind over Northeastern.

Tonight's games to decide the final 2 spots feature New Hampshire(another last second tie then OT winner over Duluth) vs Boston College at 5 and then following will be Bemidji State facing off against Cornell. Games are slated for ESPN2 and/or ESPNU.

Meanwhile on the basketball front...my bracket was blown out of the water last night when #3 seeded Villanova defeated Big East Rival and #1 seed Pittsburgh...I had Pitt winning in all my brackets. Now, all I can do is root against UCONN and UNC, and hope neither team makes the championship game.....being a Duke fan I despise both schools(Athletically Speaking). Tonight, Michigan State vs Louisville, and UNC vs Oklahoma will send the final 2 teams to fill the final 4 along with UCONN and Nova'.

Weather wise over the weekend, Friday was a perfect late March day, sunshine, low winds, and a high in the lower 60s...yesterday was cloudy and windy, a raw east wind, with temps in the middle 50s...today we are expecting some snow flurries and about 40 for the afternoon temperatures....heavy thunderstorms rolled through last night.

Despite the weather or maybe because of it, I got a scrimmage in both Friday and Saturday...making it all 7 scrimmages completed, something indeed rare for March. Usually we are lucky to get 1 or 2 in per pre-season. Tomorrow, weather permitting the regular season kicks off...I'm at Delphos St. Johns for a varsity match-up with Wapakoneta. Tuesday Wayne Trace hosts perennial power Defiance, so Garry and I will team up for that one.

Time to get around and see what this Sunday brings....

September 2026? WTH?

Yep, only the 4th post of this year, marking the beginning of year #20...but tis what it tis... VA eye appointment last week, and yesterday...
