Red Sky at Night, Collar Bones, and More Rain

After a couple of days without the persistent rains of the past month or more, the forecast was calling for an 80% chance of storms and showers for Sunday afternoon....the forecasters did not disappoint...well actually it was a disappointment, but the storms came, whether we wanted them or not.
Sam was scheduled to work the Junior ACME Tournament at Lima Central Catholic, a double header starting at Noon...I was slated to work with my old buddy Jim Runneals at Convoy Crestview, a double header, one in the winner's bracket, another to follow would be an elimination game. The first game was a Marathon contest between Van Wert and St. Marys. I was behind the plate at the site of my 14 inning Sectional Final game in the Spring High School Season. This game was to last just about as long, time wise, 2 hours 45 minutes, but it only took 7 innings. Van Wert carried a 7-3 lead into the bottom of the 7th, but walks, errors, and wild pitches, let St. Marys come away with a 8-7 win, and move on in the winner's bracket....The Cougars meanwhile, were left to take on the home squad, Crestview, who had been thumped on the other diamond by Minster, 21-11 in a 6 inning run rule game on the other diamond.

The "highlight" of the first contest was me...I was a human target behind the plate, getting hit by foul balls no less than 5 times..4 of them solid shots, once in the mask(no damage), once in the shoulder, one a solid hit in a crease of the protector, just above the chest protector....and then the big one...a quick hard foul tip, that caught my collar bone square...I was down to one knee, and walked over to the VW Dugout thinking "That might have broken the damn thing"...but it didn't apparently the Houseworth bones are as thick as the Houseworth skulls....I've got a bone bruise, but otherwise no worse for wear...it has been a rough Summer on the aging body. However, I was back out behind the plate and finished the game off.

Game #2 got started late, and the sun was shining bright.... but another storm brewed and that one headed north into Paulding County, which had gotten blasted on numerous occasions throughout the day....our luck was not to last however, and in the bottom of the 5th, with Van Wert on the verge of run ruling the host school, leading 9-2 with one out, 2 on, and a 3-0 count on the batter, I saw a large bolt of lightning hit to our west...we called the players in to wait out the 30 minute time delay...before resuming the game, we needed not to have bothered. Withing 15 minutes all Hell broke loose and the storm came down on us with a vengeance. 60-70 MPH winds accompanied by straight line rains ended any chance of finishing the contest in the late afternoon.

So here we are, Sam and I will work the finish of the Van Wert/Crestview game then move to the back diamond for a elimination game...then Garry and George will work the other Winner's Bracket contest on the main diamond at 6pm. This however is in doubt at least for today...you see it decided to rain like cats and dogs again about 7 this morning, it's over now, but with as much rain as the Convoy area go last night....I'm not sure either diamond, especially the back reserve diamond, can dry off in time.

----
More Rain? Red Sky at Night, Sailors Delight?

As I headed out of Convoy, once the game was cancelled for the day, Jim and I headed to the local carry out for some liquid refreshments...I saw one of the biggest bolts of lightning in my life at the west edge of town near the Indiana Border. As we left the Carry Out, the rains returned with force, and the winds with them. As I drove down Ohio 49 south of town, I knew what it was like going through a Hurricane. The winds probably in the 60 or 70 mile range and the rain was blinding...I drove 5 miles through that before coming up on the Intersection of US 224 in Van Wert County...the rain settled down and I made the 30 mile trip to Celina in a steady, although manageable, downpour.

Once home, I grabbed a beer, and watched more heavy rain move in from the west...after than, with Patricia sitting on the porch, I noticed a yellow turned to red hew...so I grabbed the camera, and took a few photos which are included today.

The old saying is, "Red Sky at Night, Sailors Delight"...so I figured the rains were done...not so fast, as I said, another large round of storm came through this morning, making 27 days of 33 with at least some rain...that streak is going to end it appears, as the rest of the week will be dry, or at least so they say! I'll believe a week of dry weather, only after the 7th day.

Meanwhile, rain or not, the Baseball Tournaments will continue...Garry and I, along with a dozen and a half other guys have been selected/nominated to work the Junior ACME and ACME State Tournaments, much of which will be held in Celina....not sure how many, if any, I will be assigned to work, but in the meantime, I have many Sectional and Districts games, as does Sam(along with his baseball work in Columbus), to work in....

Rain or not, the summer is going to be a busy one....

back later>>>>>
Photos-The RED Skies would not have proved a Sailor's Delight this morning, as despite the look out west of my porch last night(notice the scenic power lines)...more heavy rains hit the area around 7AM. The one thing the rains, heat, and humidity bring, is a bumper crop of flowers and weeds to go with them. And my Diamond Chest Protector is not protecting me that well...arms, and collar bone have been the latest victims...might be time for a new one next season, and probably a new plate mask as well.

Who Will Stop the Rain?

I've always said, "When you have nothing to talk about except the Weather, you don't have much to say"...that has been the story of the past few weeks, as Spring moves into Summer. Not much going on, except the Heat, Humidity, and continued rains in the Heartland. After a 60 hour respite, with Thursday being the only completely rain free day in, the storms were brewing across the Midwest again last night.
Reminds me of an old Creedence Clearwater tune from the early 70s:

The Radar turned an ugly Red as the initial storm passed through Chicago into northern Indiana and lower Michigan...it arrived dark and ugly into West Central Ohio about 9pm. We got the winds, some brief heavy rains, and lightning...no major damage that I have heard of...unlike Chicago, where the Sears Tower lost a number of windows.

A second band of storms moved through early this morning, and now the sun is back out with accompanying heat and humidity, which comes at us with a vengeance....and Summer doesn't officially begin until Monday.

The Weather, along with team cancellations, is putting a crimp in my Cigar and Beer fund for the season...counting 3 double headers I have had a total of 9 games cancelled in the past week...a tidy sum of cash in the $500 neighborhood. You expect rain outs in the Spring season of High School Baseball, usually not so much during June...this year is the exception, and it's keeping me home and frankly bored. As the song goes "too hot to fish".....double header cancelled today, nothing tomorrow, and back to rain when the first day of Summer arrives on Monday...just in time to put a damper on another round of baseball...Damn!

Patricia is in Dayton at a school related meeting this morning, and Sam is playing Softball in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he said the friends he was staying with when they arrived last night were without power...seems they got hit worse than us....Anissa, Me, the Airedale, and Cat, are "Home Alone"...enjoying the A/C and watching the boring assed World Cup. The USA doesn't play again until Wednesday in a must win situation agains Algeria...win you move on, lose you are done, and a tie...you leave your fate in other teams hands.

Like I said...not a lot going on, as you can tell, but I will return...

Photos of Places I've Lived-Final Chapter(1973-2009)

Patricia, Anissa, and I, headed south to Centerville, Ohio, yesterday afternoon. The destination was Hal's girlfriend, Lisa's condo in that quaint berg just south of Dayton off I-75. We visited for a few hours with Hal, Lisa, and Tim }Lisa's dad}, and the dogs....they fixed supper on the grill outside, and we got a chance to do a little talking...Tim and I hit it off, he seems like he's on the save wave length in his outlook as we are. We had a good time and some good conversation. Thank you Lisa, for the hospitality.

Lisa is finishing Law School at the University of Dayton this coming school year, and will take her bar exam next May I believe...she and Hal seem to hit it off pretty well and time will tell what happens there...hopefully both can get the gainful opportunities they want in the work place after all is said and done. Hal, just off his Masters at Wright State, did not secure a High School teaching job as he had hoped...but does have a good job working with Autistic youth, and is starting on a correspondence program at Penn State, which he can take on line as he continues to work. Needless to say, he still would like to teach High School and coach down the road. Things are tight everywhere in the ObamaNation, but having skills and the education that Hal and Lisa have, will certainly help them no matter the economic outlook.

The sky is leaden gray this morning, and rain is all around, but as usual, this small swath of west central Ohio has been left out, and our ground remains hard as a rock...maybe before the morning ends, we will get some of the left overs.

Photos from the places I have lived, The final Chapter 1973-2009____

After my Air Force days were done in May of 1972 I returned home to Celina, Ohio, for a spell...living here for the most part since that time, I have ventured off{mainly during my radio broadcasting days} to various other places in the Midwest and Plains.

In 1977 shortly after Patricia and I were married, we picked up the Airedales and our belongings and headed to her home state of Wisconsin...not Oconomowoc, her hometown, but north to Wausau, located in the far northwoods. I went to broadcast school at Trans American there, Patricia worked for an investment company, then at Wausau South Hospital, where Anissa was born in February 1979. Not letting the grass grow under my feet, we spent the next 18 months living on the radio.

First stop was Kokomo, Indiana, at WIOU radio in the central Indiana town, located just 90 miles due west of Celina...after a short stay there, it was on to the wild west of Dodge City, Kansas, where I plied my radio skills as News Director of KGNO, the 50,000 watt blowtorch of southwestern Kansas. About this time I realized that moving around the country every 6 or 9 months was no way to live...so in the summer of 1980, I applied for and got a radio job back home at the local station WCSM. I would stay there for nearly 3 years as Program and Sports Director/Morning Drive DJ, before finally a job opened at the Mercer County Health Department...I was in Celina for the duration, at least living here. After 8 years at the local health department, I took the position of Environmental Health Director in my birth county of Van Wert, where I stayed until retiring in 2002....during my years in the Health Department{s} I also stayed busy part time in radio and doing Cable TV news and sports broadcasts in Van Wert.
I spent the next 5 years driving RVs around the country for delivery, except for baseball season, when I umpired High School baseball...when the bottom fell out of the RV business thanks to the Bush-Obama "stimu-less bail outs", I picked up my basketball license and now enjoy my time doing football, baseball, and basketball, at the high school level...frankly I enjoy being "retired", although at times I put in more hours actually working than I ever did in Radio/Cable TV and Environmental Health.

Photo Descriptions-{top left}A night view of the Celina Lighthouse on Grand Lake and West Bank Road..below that is a daytime look as viewed from the west looking east. {top right} Our house, where we have lived since 1995, after my summer painting project, the house was built as a church parsonage in the winter of 1923. Dodge City is for sure one of the "Crossroads" of America, as you can see by the major highways{but no Interstate} that runs though the town. Next is the front view our the house on Brandon Street in Celina that I purchased in 1974....located just a block to the north of our current home. Who says you can't come home again? Downtown Kokomo, where we lived in during the last half of 1979. And a look out our front window of the farm house we lived in during our years in Northern Wisconsin...the Blizzard of March 1979 was a good one. Historic Front Street in Dodge City, Kansas. Patrica, Anissa, and I "Got out of Dodge" in the summer of 1980. And finally a dilapidated barn in Marathon County, Wisconsin...we lived on terrain such as this during our stay in Marathon County from 1977 though mid 1979...living half way between Wausau and Merrill right on the Marathon-Lincoln Line Road on a rental Horse Farm. And I would be remiss if I didn't add a photo of the old Andrews Farm house on Coldwater Creek. This is where we lived when the boys were born and they and Anissa loved the place as kids when we lived there for a decade from 1980 through the summer of 1990.

Photos/Venice,Florida, Montezuma and Celina, Ohio{1954-1968}

Still fall-like this morning, no rain in the forecast for a few more days. It was 47 this morning, temps will slowly rise to near 80 for highs by the end of the week.
---
Tomorrow I make my trek to the Joint Township Hospital, across the Lake, to visit a Dietitian. She will go over my diabetes 2 diet plan for the next 6 weeks. I already started on that path this past weekend, with the help of Patricia...already dropped about 5 pounds, without giving up a nightly beer or two, and without feeling hungry. Tomorrow we will fine turn the plan, and go with it to see how it all works out, before calling the Doc for another blood drawing around mid October.

Marxist Alert___

Glenn Beck has been going after the Obummer Administration great guns on both his radio show and his 5PM EST Fox News TV show....the Marxist-in-Chief and his minions are in a panic as Barry's poll numbers are dropping faster than a turd in a 2 story high outhouse. The Kenyan has surrounded himself with a surly crew of Black Racists/Marxists and White Liberal Socialists...and Beck is exposing Obama for what he is...A Chicago Street Radical with a hard core Marxist group surrounding him. Many he has placed in "Czar" positions, just Google up "Van Jones Communist". This son of a bitch is pushing hard for a Socialist/Marxist Utopia, and we better be ready to revolt against his plans. Beck wants everybody to be peaceful in their protests, I'm not so sure that that will work....keep your powder dry, and your basement/storeroom stocked with essentials.

-----Photos of places I have lived{part 2}

1954-1968___

On to more pleasant subjects....

The Houseworth Family of Stan and Margaret lived in Venice, Florida, for about a decade from the early 1950s through late 1962. We started out in South Venice at Alston's Cottages{see yesterday's photos}...Alston's was something akin to the old Travel Court's you can see in old movies from the 30s and 40s. We lived there from 1954 through mid 1957...then on to the Venice By-Way, before finally buying a house in the Edgewood Section of Venice City in the fall of 1958.

Dad and his brother, John, purchase a gas station in South Venice during those years...he finally sold his share to Uncle John in late 1962, and in October of that year we headed to Celina, Ohio...where I have lived off and on for the past 47 years.

In 1963 we moved just outside the small town of Montezuma, Ohio, on the south side of Grand Lake, and just 3 miles from Celina....the folks purchased a house in the fall of 63 that put us within walking distance of Whiskey Run at the edge of the small Lake Front Airport. Whiskey Run is where I would learn to Ice Skate...spent many a winter weekend day there during my early high school days.

Living on the outskirts of Montezuma, going to school in Celina from 1963 until my Air Force days began in June 1968...I learned to drive, drink, and on occasion, open my big mouth at the wrong time...looking back, it was a growing experience, if not an always fun one.

Photos-Alston's Cottages in 1954, mom marked our humble abode with the "X" on this post card she sent to Grandma Houseworth{double click to see large version}. John and Stan's Phillips 66 Gas Station...it was located in South Venice, near Alston's. Me{left}, Mike, and sister Marty in 1956..sister Kelly, born in Venice, didn't come along until the summer of 1962. Whiskey Run near Montezuma, where I learned to Ice Skate and freeze my toes. 1967 the year I graduated, sitting on Dad's Dodge Charger, not half as bad ass as I thought I would like to have been. And finally Dad's Marathon Station on Main Street in Celina, as it looks today...he purchased it in the fall of 1962.

Random Photos of the Week

Sunny, hot, and humid for the week, but as they say, the breeze helps....sure it does. Been busy, and heading for another baseball game within the half hour. Here are some photos of this weeks activities:

Me with my Uncle Jack DeVore of Antwerp, Ohio, on Saturday night for the celebration of his 80th birthday...he had just played 18 holes of golf....

The Amish Crew has the roof done and the old chimney down...just the gutters and downspouts to go...then I can begin the painting process. Shoud be nice hot summer work....the South Vietnam Flag, the Air Force/RVAF QC patches, and the Air Police Shield that my former NCOIC Phil Lange sent me back in early May are now behind glass and matted and framed. More on Phil Later in the week. And finally Glenn Beck has come out with a new version of "Common Sense" based on the 200+ year old Thomas Paine novel. Beck's book sold more than 8 times any other new book that came out over the weekend....much to the gnashing of teeth in the Liberal Lame Brained Media I am sure....As for me, I don't read many books these day, just too time consuming, but I still love to listen to them on audio, thus at about twice the price, I picked up the "book" at Wally World that I can listen to while driving between games for the rest of the summer. Take that NY Times and MSNBC!

Red Sky in Morning/Easter Rehash

Taking a look out the landing window just minutes before sunrise this morning, the old adage "Red Sky in Morning, Sailor's Warning" seems to be coming into focus for the western Ohio region. We are talking 90% chance of rain, and that should arrive before noon. The chances of getting my game in at Ottoville tonight and the MAC League game at New Knoxville tomorrow, seem to be slim indeed. I can't complain much though, so far, counting scrimmages, I've umpired in 17 or 20 scheduled games. Sam and I got a double dip in at Haviland on Saturday, in sunny, albeit, windy and coolish temps...yesterday for our family Easter get together, we had sunshine and 55 or so.

A few items to cover this morning.....

The news media is all ga-ga that the American Navy has dispatched 3 of the 4 half assed "Pirates" that held the American ship and Captain hostage over the past few days, and of course the lap dog media is saying what a hero Barack Obama is for having the guts to order the use of force..."use of force, in a time where Americans were being held hostage" Wow! How quaint....congrats to the Navy Seals who performed their duties...the only thing that surprises me is the Barry actually let them take out a few of his Islamic brothers....guess they weren't family? One thing Obama is, he's a politician, and with his poll numbers down and the economy in the tank, Barry must have figured he could get the sheeple back in line, by doing something besides bowing down and kissing the ass of the Saudi King...but by the looks of other blogs and the Internet, he has scored some political points.

Happy Birthday to Mom and Hal
---------------------

Margaret Houseworth, born Margaret Helen DeVore in Chester, Pennsylvania,
on this date in 1924, turns 85 today....she is with the "rest" of the family completing her winter in Florida, with oldest Mike and at youngest Kelly's place outside Naples....meanwhile her youngest Grandson Hal Stanley Houseworth turns the big 25 today. Hal is back down in Fairborn, Ohio, after spending most of Easter with us...or out on the town with old local friends....Hal was born on mom's 60th birthday at Coldwater, Ohio.
Yesterday we had Easter Dinner at our place, and my niece Molly and her husband Aaron, had the youngest member of the family Lilly here, Lilly was born the day before my 60th birthday, March 15th, in lower Michigan.

Over the past few years, rather than a sit down big dinner for Easter, Patricia has opted with sister Marty to have Buffet type combination meals of meats, deserts, salads, and side dishes....this seems to work out best for all. yesterday we had several kinds of meats(London Broil, Burritos, and home made Chicken Noodle Soup), along with many side dishes, fruits, salads, and deserts(Coffee Cake, Upside Down Cake, Apple Pie), and many other items, more than enough that 11 of us made only a partial dent in it.....the holiday get together worked out well, and we all go a chance to meet Lilly.

Hockey News
__________

The NHL and IHL both ended their regular seasons over the weekend, with mixed results for our family favorites....

In the International Hockey League, the defending league and cup champions, Fort Wayne Komets, finished on top again this season in the 6 team league, and enter the 2 rounds of Turner Cup action with all the momentum they need...taking 13 out of their last 14 games to finish ahead of the pack.

Meanwhile in the National Hockey League, my favorite team, the Philadelphia Flyers, and Sam's, the Columbus Blue Jackets both staggered into the playoffs. The Flyers needing only 1 point in their final game, for home ice advantage, blew 3 leads at home and lost to the NY Rangers, thus after holding 4th place for most of the winter, end up tied with Pittsburgh, but losing the tie breaker and have to open at the Pen-queens, led by Cindy Crosby and Michelle Maulkin, rather than having home ice....The Blue Jackets who held 6th place since January managed to blow that, and fall to 7th, where they will now face defending champion Detroit. As Sam(who has tickets for the first ever playoff game in Columbus) said...It's not that they can't beat the Red Wings(the 2 teams tied the season series at 3 games a piece), it't the influx of Red Wing fans who will pay any price to infiltrate Nationwide Arena in Columbus to make the Columbus home games look like neutral ice. Columbus has not been in the league to form a strong rivalry with any one team...but I can tell you, Blue Jacket fans despise Red Wing fans, especially the band wagon trash from the Toledo area(the same set of losers that root for Michigan Football over Ohio State)...we all sort of wish Islamic infested Toledo would cede to Michigan...it would make the IQ of the state go up by a few digits for sure. {sarcasm alert, it's only sports}

A rainy Monday it's going to be.....at least around here, enjoy the start of the week regardless.

photos-logos-Top Left-The sunrise before the rain moves in over the city of Celina this morning, as taken from my staircase landing window./The beginnings of our family Easter Buffet set up and Patricia holding the newest member of the family Lilly(born March 15th)/The Blue Jackets can no longer be made fun of...after 8 season they finally make the Stanley Cup Playoffs, question is, can the win at least one from the Red Wings? And The Flyers of Philadelphia and the Komets of Fort Wayne are back in the playoffs...the K's will try to defend their IHL Turner Cup Championship.

Sixty Turning the Big 6-0

A beautiful weekend by March standards...low 50s Saturday and 60 yesterday...more of the same through Wednesday, before more March-like weather returns for the latter part of week, but no frigid temps or conditions on the horizon. I spent most of both days outside, Anissa and Reagan the Airedale joined me...Patricia spent much of the weekend finishing up some "due now" school work...but did get out for a walk on Sunday. Friday night we(Patricia, Anissa, and me) went to the newest Mexican Restaurant in Celina, where I promptly set back my diet a couple of days....but it's still on Target, I've lost 9 pounds in 4 weeks after this morning's weight in....down to 206 from 215....21 to go by summers end.

Sam began his college baseball career at the age of 27 Saturday...starting at the DH(Designated Hitter) for The Ohio State-Lima Barons. He went 0 for 2 Striking out the first career at bat and popping out the second...the team went on to lose a tri-team double header to Clark and Southern Colleges by 9-2 and 9-6 scores. Sam's first competitive games since 1999 back in High School...says he enjoyed it. Now it's finals week for both him and younger brother Hal, who is finishing up his Masters at Wright State.

A quick note on our "Savior-and-Thief" Barack Barry Soetoro Obama... over the weekend he says he now wants to TAX Health Care...the very same thing he jumped on McCain for saying during the Campaign...how's that Change working out for you who voted for this worthless sonofabitch?

Amazing how utterly stupid the vast majority of American voters are.
------
Turning 60______

Birthdays have never been a big deal to me...I can remember thinking about a few milestones however. I always couldn't wait until I turned 25...guessing that would actually make me an adult, or seem mature. Kind of stupid I know, here I had already spent 4 years in the military, been to war, and I was thinking a certain age would make or make me seem "mature"...it didn't and I wasn't.

Or how about 30? I actually think this is the only birthday I actually dreaded...30 seemed old back in 1979..I had just became a father for the first time, and looked at it as being "over-the-hill"...it wasn't, and I wasn't.

Now 50 was old...there was little doubt I couldn't do what I had once done. By this time however, I was into some heavy weight lifting and training...my back was in pretty good shape, after suffering from the lingering effects of a major motorcycle accident when I was 38. At 50, despite being "old", I was probably in the best shape, and strongest condition of my adult life.

And today...I turn 60, sixty, the Big 6-O! And yes, I no longer can bench press 300 pounds..the joints just can't take it...can't set at a bar downtown for hours and pour down the 12 oz curls a 12 pack a night...nor do I want to. I still feel pretty good for my age, and try to stay in shape...yes I need to lose some of the pounds I gained during my weight lifting days. But let's face it, 60 is just a number, and today happens to be the 60 anniversary of the day back in 1949 that mom popped me out in Van Wert, Ohio....a lot of days and experiences under the bridge...hopefully some productive ones to come....regardless, I am ready for what comes my way.

Sixty is-No Big Deal! I plan on doing some reading, cleaning up the house a little, and toss my Birthday Dinner in the oven about 3 O'clock....Patricia wanted to bake me something, but I declined. She's a great cook and makes great desserts...but if I fall off the no sweets wagon in a big way this early on the modified Weight Watchers Diet, I may not be able to climb back on...so for now I will decline, and save that one for later.

The High School Baseball Scrimmage season begins this week as the Basketball Season winds down...Coldwater is still left among the boys, after knocking off the defending state champions, Ottawa-Glandorf, in the Division 3 District Finals....good luck to them. My season is set to begin on Thursday at Lima Central Catholic for a scrimmage, then on to Russia(Rue-She) Saturday morning....I am ready, hopefully my legs and rest of my 60 year old body are.

And speaking of Birthdays...My niece Molly and her husband Aaron had a new entry into the family last night "Lilly" was born 3 hours before my birthday in Michigan....Welcome to the family kid!

September 2026? WTH?

Yep, only the 4th post of this year, marking the beginning of year #20...but tis what it tis... VA eye appointment last week, and yesterday...
