The cold rains have returned to West Central Ohio...but hope is on the horizon. It appears that some sun and warmer temperatures will be mixed in with the clouds and rain for the next 2 weeks. I'm not sure how many, if any, scrimmage baseball games I will get in before the regular season is set to begin on March 28th...but the season will eventually kick off.
The Ides of March_____
March 15th is that day, along with St. Patrick's Day, that my birthday is sandwiched in between..."Beware the Ides of March" was the warning to Cesar...this March 15th brings the beginning of the NCAA Basketball Tournament. It gets it start just a few miles south of me, in Dayton. 2 games on the agenda for tonight, and 2 more tomorrow, to pare the field down to 64. Then Thursday and Friday the games kick off around the country. My two favorite teams have #1 seeds...Duke and Ohio State, OSU with the top overall seed goes into the east and begins play in Cleveland, while the Blue Devils were sent to the West Regional, but first have to get by the weekend in their home state of North Carolina. Go Duke! If the Blue Devils get knocked off, Go Buckeyes....those 2 teams would meet in the national semi final, if they would happen to get that far....I would have to root for the Blue Devils then...but without a national title since 1960, I don't mind if the Buckeyes win it all...as long as they don't go through Duke to do it.
There have been some great tournament moments in the past years...of course most of the ones I have enjoyed have been the Duke runs to the title games...Coach K and Company, while hated by most of the country, have made it pretty enjoyable to be a Blue Devil fan. I have no vested interest in Duke, a small liberal university from North Carolina...I just have always admired their top flight coach, and the mix of kids he surrounds himself and his program with. For the most part, kids that are actually students first, and athletes second. Players that actually attend classes and graduate with degrees that are worth something...few basketball or football programs around the country, at least in the major programs, can say that.
Some Great Moments in the NCAAs:
Duke beats Kentucky on the Laettner Miracle Shot...
I would love to say I was sitting on my recliner or at the game when this happened...but alas, I, along with my brother-in-law, was on the way back from the Ohio High School Basketball Championship...and was listening to the game on radio...after Kentucky hit the shot to take the lead with 2.1 seconds left, I turned to him and said..."Well Hell, at least they won last year", thinking the game was all but over....(it wasn't):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AY-iq58_oz4
The "Dookies" went on to win it all again....
Butler tries to pull a "Laettner"....
2010 saw another nail biter..this time upstart Butler out of Indianapolis and the Horizon League tried to steal the championship on their home court....(here are the final 2 minutes):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SB00wfyuQjY
I'm still trying to figure out why Duke wanted to intentionally miss that last free throw...but it made for great drama. The Blue Devils hoisted the national title for the 4 time in 20 years...to go with a handful of other final four appearances.
So with the majority of games to be played in the next 5 days...I probably will be stuck by the TV(something I usually don't do these days) or watching live on the Internet....my brackets are filled out and I'm ready for them to "go bust".....
back later>>>>
Photos-The NCAA kicks off in Dayton, Ohio, just down the road tonight...4 "play in" games the next two nights, before the majority of teams kick off on Thursday and Friday. Christian Laettner celebrates after hitting the shot that beat Kentucky in the Regionals in 1991, and Duke Senior Kyle Singler will try to lead this years edition to back to back championships.

Basketball Weekend....Earthquakes and Donut eating Union Bosses...
First off let me say...The photos, video and stories coming out of Japan are something to behold...horrific to say the least...I pray for the best for those poor souls.
Meanwhile life moves on in somewhat normal terms for the rest of the world....it has to...it's the way of natural selection. We were lucky, except the damn fool in California who decided to film the waves coming ashore, this time...the next big one, maybe we won't be. When you choose to live near a large fault, Hello California, sometimes **it happens. The tragedy in Japan will also have the effect to set the US Nuclear Program back 50 years...the Environmental Nuts will be out in full force to stop further and future Nuclear Power options, and really it will be a lame excuse to keep us under the thumb of the marauding murdering bastards in the Middle East and their oil.
Basketball____
While that was happening and the world stood and watched, I basically spent the weekend with basketball...either officiating or watching the college game.
First off to follow up on Friday's post: The Van Wert Cougars finally got a measure of payback for 3 straight overtime loses to their WBL Rival, Celina's Bulldogs. The Bulldogs defeated Van Wert for the 3rd straight time, all in overtime, on their way to the league championship this season....for awhile Saturday night in the D2 District Title game at Ohio Northern University, it looked like OT #4 was at hand. But a foul, and a couple of Cory Clifton free throws with 8.3 seconds left, gave Van Wert a District title and ended Celina's season at 19 wins and 4 loses. The Cougars move on to the Regional at Bowling Green, with a good shot at a State Tournament birth for the first time since 1992. Celina gets ready for baseball and track.
On Saturday, I got up early, grabbed a coffee and a quick breakfast, and headed to Rockford and Parkway High School. 22 games, in the 5th and 6th grade boys level, were on the agenda. I worked 5 games on the main floor...beginning at 8:30 I wrapped up by 12:30 in the afternoon. That was the final basketball for me until next November, time to pack up the roundball tools and clothes, and get ready for baseball next week. The one thing that did strike me at this level, which I don't usually do(but what the heck? The money was good, and I needed the exercise)...was the fans. Not all, but on a couple of teams, usually the bad ones, the fans, made up of out of shape fathers and grandparents who should be home knitting or sleeping, are idiots.
Hint: When your kid's team gets beat 47-16 and the winning team plays it's subs most of the second half, it's not the officials fault that the team sucks.
I arrive home just after 1pm, grabbed a few Stout Beers and proceeded to park my butt on the leather recliner....I was going to watch the finals and semi~finals of the NCAA League Tournaments and have beer throughout the day and early evening. Sunday was going to be the same....and I did.
My teams, the Duke Blue Devils, and the OSU Buckeyes both won their respective tournaments...Duke knocking off hated rival North Carolina, and the Bucks defeating upstart Penn State. Both won by double figures, but both defeated teams also got slots in the coming NCAA Tournament....time to fill out your brackets, the tournament kicks off tomorrow, just 60 miles south of here in Dayton, at the UD Arena.
Now I can relax and watch the tournament for a few weeks....while, if it dries out, I also begin the baseball season, with some 50 games in a fast moving 7 week period. Of course rain and wet grounds will probably drop the total numbers, before the post season kicks off on May 7th.
Kicking the Public Union's asses_____
Way to go Governor Scott Walker and Wisconsin!
Walker and Company have put a smack down on the Union Thugs that make up the leadership of the Public Unions in Wisconsin...and the left wing media cannot stand it. Will there be a recall? Maybe, but have fun getting your power back thugs....it isn't going to happen. At least not anytime soon.
So a little info for AFL-CIO leader Richard Trumka, and shit stirring racists like Jesse Jackass..."Choke On Those Donuts You Have Been Stuffing in Your Pieholes"...America, American Workers, and especially taxpaying patriots, would be better off if you indeed choked on those free meals you have been sucking down over the years!
Tonight, Patricia and I will take in the Wabash Valley Dartball Banquet that ends the season...dinner, entertainment, awards, etc, will end the season, and like Basketball, it will be around November before I pick up the darts again.
That's a short look at the weekend past and week ahead...
back later>>>>
Photos-top left.....yep, it was a basketball weekend for PRH....Van Wert and Duke were among the high school and college winners...and finally Obama and his gay donut, chomping, union thug boss, Richard "I'll three with extra jelly" Trumka....2 more useless bastards in the same photo would be hard to find.

Disater in Japan/Saudi "Day of Rage"/Super Full Moon Coming March 19th
Patricia woke me up about 7 to let me know what was going on in Japan and the Pacific Rim. It seems a monster Earthquake of 8.9 and following Tidal Wave(why the Hell they now call it a Tsunami is beyond me? In the west it's a freaking 'TIDAL WAVE")..early reports have 60 dead, but it sadly appears that this death toll will rage into the thousands:

The wall of water had reached the Hawaiian Islands around 8am this morning...but reports are that that wall has been greatly reduced, hopefully damage and personal injuries will be at a minimum. Stay Tuned!

Day of Rage in Saudi Arabia_____
Meanwhile a world away...the crazy Islamics continue to burn their world....
Libya strongman Qaddafi (I seen this sorry bastards name spelled a dozen different ways, so this is good enough) has unleashed his military on the Rebels...while our weak knee Kenya born President, sits on his ass and along with Queen Moo-Shell talks about "Bullying": Meanwhile today in Oil rich Saudi Arabia, the people are protesting....you gotta wonder how crazy things are going to get, while our own version of Nero, Barry Soetoro, fiddles:

Super Full Moon Coming?
Perhaps if the disaster in Japan had waited for 8 days...the dire predictions of disasters coming on March 19th would really set the world on it's ear: Next Saturday the Super Moon, a full one to be exact, will be on display:

Tomorrow morning, if the world doesn't end{insert sarcasm}, I will head north to Rockford, where I am scheduled to officiate my final basketball of the season...5 morning games in a 5th and 6th grade boys tournament. I will then pack away that gear, hang up the clothes, and get ready for baseball, which scrimmage wise is slated to begin next week.
Have a safe weekend and enjoy....

Celina vs Van Wert Basketball District Final...
A gloomy, damp, wet, start to the Thursday...the kind of morning I'm glad I don't have to get out and umpire a baseball game. Sure, I'm more than ready for the season to start, but days like this are ones I do not look forward to standing on a cold, damp, baseball diamond. The next few weeks, if the extended forecast is to be believed, will see a combination of rain, freezing rain, some snow, some sunshine, and temperatures between the low to mid 30s and near 60 for highs.
District 2 Basketball_____
Celina and Van Wert Boys Basketball teams move on to the final game....
This Saturday night Western Buckeye League rivals The Celina Bulldogs and the Van Wert Cougars will battle it out at Ohio Northern University in Ada, for the Division II District Championship...the winner will move on to the D2 Regional. This game is interesting in quite a few ways for me....
Since I began officiating I really have not followed the local teams closely, when you see and work with different schools, you tend to tune out the results of each weeks games, and you tend, or at least try, to view the various teams without a rooting interest. However, this Saturday night's contest for the District Crown does bring back memories of years gone by.
I graduated from Celina in 1967...and for much of the last 47 years, with the exception of the Air Force years, a spell in upstate New York, and a few years working in radio around the midwest, I have called Celina home. We moved here from Venice, Florida, back in the early 60s, I returned in the summer of 1980, and for the past 30 years I have called the Celina area home. As for Van Wert..I was born in the old Van Wert Hospital in 1949, and lived in the small berg of Scott, on the Van Wert-Paulding County line for the next 5 years, before the family pulled up stakes, and moved to South Florida.
I broadcast sports in Celina for a few years at WCSM, when I was the Program Director at that small station. Then in 1982, I became part time News Director at Cable Channel 7 in Van Wert...I would also become the play-by-play voice of The Van Wert Cougars on cable for the next decade. In 1991, I left the Mercer County Health Department, and moved on to Van Wert as the Environmental Health Director, where I would stay for the next dozen years before retiring....I would continue to do some play-by-play at the Van Wert Radio Stations as well.
So you see, I have a vested interest in the game Saturday...I live in Celina, am a Celina graduate, as are my sons....I also have past ties with Van Wert. Born there, worked there, and was the voice of their basketball and football teams for years. These days, I don't old a rooting interest, but I do look forward to them playing for the District crown. And if the past is any indication, it should be a dandy.
Celina won the league, Van Wert was 2 games back, but helped Celina to the outright title by defeating Ottawa~Glandorf, the week before Celina dispatched the Titans on the final game of the season. Van Wert comes into the game at 18 wins 5 loses, Celina at 19 and 3. A month or so ago, Celina went to Van Wert and came away with a hard fought Overtime win....this marked the third straight year, that the teams have battled into OT, including one double overtime....Celina has won them all. Another Overtime Game on the agenda? Perhaps...the old rivals seem pretty even when all is said and done....the prize is a trip to the Bowling Green Regional next week, with a trip the the State Finals just a couple games away....Good Luck to both teams.

The Vest's Folly, aka Jim Tressel takes a fall....more rain, rain, rain....
Garry and I traveled back from Indian Lake High School last night after a local rules meeting at our Southwest District association, "Top of Ohio"....a few sprinkles of rain hit the windshield on the 45 mile trek home...and that was just the beginning of what was to come. The heavy rain began overnight and continued right up until the time I began to type today's edition of "A Day in the Life"...it is now in the process of winding down. It appears we will get a flurry or two through tomorrow as the temps dip a bit...but nothing in the cards say it will amount to any accumulations.

Ohio State Football takes a hit_____
As regular readers of this blog know, I am an Ohio State football fan, and a Duke Basketball fan(although I also root for the Buckeyes, as long at they don't play each other). What I am not a fan of is this current edition of Ohio State and the slave like devotion their head coach, Jim Tressel, aka "The Vest" has had to his punk quarterback, Terrelle Pryor. Pryor came on the scene as the self promoting "Messiah" of College Football a few years ago, the media ate it up. Buckeye fans, and apparently Tressel, fell under his spell, and were more than happy when, after a bump in the engine back in 2008, Tressel threw Senior QB Todd Boeckman, under the bus for Pryor, whom it appears he made a promise to 'start immediately' upon his arrival at Columbus. The season was pretty much in shambles, and the reputation of The Vest in many eyes(including mine) was forever ruined. Sure they won the Big Ten, beat Michigan, and made(lost) in the Fiesta Bowl...but the stench of that season has lingered to some.
Yesterday, following months of speculation, and charges against Pryor and others on the team, it all came crashing down on the seemly clean cut Ohio State coach. Last night, Tressel, OSU Athletic Director, Gene Smith, and the bow tie wearing university President Gorden Gee, called a hastened press conference, to lay out the fact that The Vest had been caught in a lie...a big time lie. Despite previous denials, Tressel admitted that he had indeed been notified that Pryor and Company had been hanging around a reputed drug dealer and tattoo parlor owner, and selling autographs and memorabilia to same. Problem for Ohio State and Tressel was, he had in December stated he had just became aware of the problems...the uncovered e-mails proved otherwise. The Vest had known about the problems since April of 2010.

So Ohio State, in an apparent effort to defuse the situation, before the NCAA investigation finds more "dirt" on the OSU football program, and Jim Tressel, fine their coach $250K and suspended him for the first two games of next season....I'm thinking the NCAA is going to find that is not quite enough. So despite his 9-1 record against hated Michigan, 3 appearances in the National Title Game(with 1 win), and a 5-3 BCS Bowl Record, it appears that the bloom is off this rose. In my opinion, the whole mess goes back to selling his soul and his 2008 Senior Class out for a piece of garbage named Terrelle Pryor, who if nothing else, has been as big a bust as I thought he would be. For once I can smile saying..."I told you so". I remain an Ohio State Football fan, but not of it's coach, or that sorry excuse of a human being he calls his quarterback. The other foot may soon drop on The Vest, but with the NCAA, who knows, he may get off with this slap on the wrist?

Meeting up with "Wulfie" and Kent at McSobers in Coldwater tonight....but nothing else is planned in the next couple of days.

Photos-Jim "The Vest" Tressel, the embattled coach(and deservedly so) of The Ohio State University Football...The logo of the Top of Ohio Baseball Umpires Association, my other association, Tressel's prodigal son Terrelle "I'm the Messiah" Pryor, where the Vest's problem's really begin...and the area Radar as it looked at 1:30 this afternoon...the rain begins to move out.

Dartball Final...
Was cloudy when I got up this morning. They had been calling for mostly sunny skies and 52 for a high....but the radar is showing southern Indiana towards the Cincinnati covered by rain. The sun has managed to peek out, from behind the dark layer, however, if the forecast is close, tonight and tomorrow will bring another inch or so of unwelcome rain.Tonight, Garry and I will head south and east towards Indian Lake High School for a baseball rules meeting....The Top of the Hill is one of two associations that I belong to. I try to get down that way at least on a couple occasions....just for a different perspective on how things go in the Southwest District as compared to our Northwest District. I usually do a few games down in the SW each season, but this year, I pretty much filled my schedule before I knew what was going on, so it doesn't appear that I have anything to umpire down that way this year.....However, I did tell Eric, the assigner for that region, that I would hold some dates open for 2012.
Dartball Finals___
I headed to Hopewell Lutheran last night for the All Star Game...making the South team for the 14th time in my 17 years of play, it has become routine most years. We lost the first game to the North 6-4, came back strong in the second of three, winning 8-2, then our hitting went "south" in the final contest, and we got shut out 10-0. I cannot remember ever seeing a shutout in All Star play...but we managed it. I went 4 for 9 on the night, batting 5th in the 12 player line up. So the season is ended, except for the Banquet back at Hopewell next Monday evening. There we will have dinner, some entertainment, and the awards, trophies and All Star T~Shirts will be passed out....the darts will be stored for 7 months, and come October, we will dust off the boards and darts, and begin season #76 for the Wabash Valley Dartball League. The final results ended up like this:
South Champions-First Half~Mount Carmel
Second Half~Hopewell Mt Carmel wins playoff
North Champions-First Half~Rockford Methodist
Second Half~Schumm Lutheran Schumm wins playoff
Mount Carmel defeats Schumm 2 games to 1 in League Championship series
---------------------------
Post Season Tournament
Hopewell defeats Celina SJ Lutheran 2 games to 1
North defeats South 2 games to 1 in All Star Contest....
Four different teams win trophies, so all-in-all the season was pretty successful, and the wealth was spread around.
Tomorrow I get the eyes checked out...just in time for Baseball season. On Saturday I will done the basketball officiating wear one more time. Working a full morning of games at Parkway HS in Rockford, for the 5th and 6th grade boys tournament, then those get stored away until November. Sometime this week I will get a hair cut, and that is how this week will progress....hopefully with no surprises.

Weekend Rains, Waldo, Ohio, Baloney, Basketball, Darbtball, and a Wedding Reception....
Friday dawned wet, like it has been so much of late....and the rains continued through Saturday, before turning to some wet snow on Saturday night....
Friday Night____
Celina boys basketball team moved it's record to 18 wins and 3 loses and headed for District action later this week, after defeating WBL rival Wapak 72-40, for the Sectional Championship. The Bulldogs fell behind 9-0 early, but owned the Redskins the remainder of the game and will face Tiffin Colombian in the District Semi Finals. Van Wert also moved on to the same District....
Saturday_____
It was still raining when I awoke in the morning....a trip to Columbus was in the offing. I had to take Sam's Nissan back to him, after getting the vehicle a new alternator installed. I had talked Nick into taking the trip down...he would drive his vehicle and follow me down to OSU, then after getting Sam's car back to the complex, we would head to Waldo for some famous Bologna.
Waldo, Ohio, Population 300____
The small berg of Waldo is located some 25 miles north of Columbus, on US Rt 23....nestled on the north side of the Marion-Delaware County line...12 miles south of the County Seat of Marion, Waldo has some pretty interesting history, you can find much of that if you search my Houseworth Genealogy Blog:
http://israelhouseworth.blogspot.com/
My great-great Grandparents on both sides of the Houseworth family, along with GGG-Grandfather Israel Houseworth arrived in Waldo in the 1850s, one of the stopping points on the family travels west from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, that began in the late 1700s. If you drive through the Waldo Town Cemetery, plenty of gravestones, with the names of Ursula, Maish, Henry, John P, Maria Houseworth, and others from those that came before me. My great-great Grandmother Ursula owned the acres which US 23 now pushes past Waldo between the Capitol and Marion. She also owned, according the land records and maps of 1880, the land where the town park now sets...just down the street from the Cemetery. I used to stop at Waldo, looking for graves and records in my genealogy research, now days I stop by at least twice a year in search of G&R Tavern, and a taste of their "World Famous Bologna"(not to be confused with grocery store sliced "Baloney", the two are not even close).
Nick and I arrived about 11:30 in the morning, ordered up a couple of Bologna Sandwiches, mine with sweet pickle, hot pepper cheese, and mustard....we also ordered a couple of beers and sides of deep fried mushrooms, and onion rings. I have never had a bad meal at G&R....always worth the trip back to the "Homeland of the Houseworths", both the heroes and villains of the family. You can find both on my genealogy blog.
More Flood Waters____
Once done with business at G&R, we stopped by the graveyard to say "Hello" to the family, and headed out of town on Ohio 47 towards Indian Lake and then home to via 33 to Celina. The farm lands and parts of 47 had plenty of standing water. Prospect, another small town along the way with Houseworth family ties, was on the route. When we arrived in the town of 1100 folks we saw the Columbus TV station, Channel 6 had arrived....the Scioto River was out of it's banks and had flooded the north end of town. We worked our way around, snapped a couple of photos, and continued on our trip home...the rain was still falling. Moving on west and north where the flood waters near Indian Lake were as deep as we had ever seen them along US 33...with the extra inch of rain we are slated to get on Wednesday, I'm not sure when they will recede.
By the time we arrived back in Celina, the early 50 degree temperatures had dropped to the mid 30s...and it didn't take much imagination to figure out, the rain, if it continued, would turn to snow.
Wedding Reception____
After a quick shower, I dressed, and Patricia and I headed over to St. Marys, which had flood problems of it's own last week, for the wedding reception of Garry and Lisa's daughter Lindsey. The USWA Union Hall(imagine me stepping foot in a Union Hall these days) was the place of the reception....it turned out well, nice meal great time, saw some people I had not seen in years. To top it off, Garry had brewed several barrels of his own home beer, including a Red, a Lager, and a dark bock style....I managed to pour a couple of pitchers, which I enjoyed over the next several hours.
It had been a long day, so around 9:30 or so, Patrica, who had been suffering from a cold, and I decided to head out...with her driving of course....I had passed my limit. After saying our goodbyes we walked out, and noticed the cars were covered with about an inch of wet snow....the roads were just wet, and the 10 mile trek back to Celina was no problem.
Basketball Finals_____
I arrived home in time to watch much of the second half of the Duke/UNC game. It was for all the marbles, sadly Duke was outgunned in this match up at the Tar Heels home....UNC would take the game and the regular season ACC Title. I hate UNC!...I didn't have time to dwell on it though...I was ready for a good night's sleep.
Sunday would see a mixed bag for me....after the Duke loss on Saturday, I looked forward to the Flyers vs New York Rangers NHL game...the first place Philly team was slumping, but they had owned the New Yorkers all season...not yesterday however. The Rangers scored early in the first minute, and the Flyers never recovered, a 7-0 blowout was the result, Philadelphia's fourth straight loss, but still leading the East.
OK, 0 for 2, in a 18 hours period...maybe the Ohio State Buckeyes, who had clinched the Big Ten regular season when Purdue got knocked off by Iowa the previous day, and who had revenge in mind when they hosted Wisconsin, could make things better. First in football, then last month in basketball, the Badgers had knocked off the Buckeyes when they were undefeated and ranked #1...the one great thing about basketball is, you usually get to extract some revenge. Ohio State did just that, coming away with a 93-65 Victory. Hitting 14 of 15 three point shots(the last 14 in a row) led by John Diebler, who hit 8 of 9, on his way to 27 points. The hot shooting senior has now knocked down 17 of 19 treys in the last two games. The Big Ten Tournament begins Thursday...Ohio State, back at #1, is playing as good as anybody in the nation right now.
Dartball, one more time_____
The last night of Dartball is at hand.....due to snow, they will have both boards running at once at Hopewell Lutheran. Schumm will take on Mt Carmel for the regular season championship...meaning 4 of the 8 teams will trophy. Hopewell won the Tournament, with us(Celina St. John Lutheran) coming in as runners up.
With the finals starting at 7pm, the All Star Game will begin at 7:30, the players on the participating finals teams will be moving back and forth between boards. Playing for the south, I managed to make the team for the 14th time in my 17 years of playing in the league. Next week the season ending banquet will see the final Dartball activity until next October, when season number 76 of The Wabash Valley Dartball League will kick off.
Baseball meeting tomorrow at Indian Lake High School, and then the rest of the week is open....for now!

Photos-Me posing at the famous G&R sign in Waldo, Ohio....now that's a Baloney Sandwich! The Map of property owners and plots at Waldo, Ohio, in 1878....my Great-Great Grandmother, Ursula Houseworth owned large portions of the acres in and near the town. US 23 runs through parts these days, the western property is where the town park in located now. And Flood Waters...from the Scioto River in Prospect on Saturday, and last week when our Grand Lake neighbors at St. Marys at their own issues...including Skip Bachman Stadium under water into the stands and as high as the cross bars of the football goal posts. Rain Storms I Remember in the American Heartland and Tan Son Nhut, Vietnam...
The weather gerbils have downgraded the predicted rain totals from a bit over 3 inches, down to 1.5. Sure, still more than we need or want, but spread out over the next 36 hours, I'm guessing it won't increase the flooding potential....at least that is the hope. Of course they could be wrong on the predictions...they often are. It never ceases to amaze me, with the billions of dollars of equipment spent on forecasting, and computer models, we can't get a better handle than we do on the weather coming our way. Sure it's better than the Farmer's Almanac, but even they get it right on occasion...maybe more often than the Weather Channel. Of course since the WC was bought out by the arm of the Obama Administration, NBC...they are more concerned about Green Energy and Global Warming Bullshit, than they are about getting the forecast correct.
Remembering Rains____2003 and 1970Days we have had of late make me harken back to some rains I remember well. The last serious rain, which really had me concerned of life and limb occurred back in July of 2003. I had delivered a RV(motor home to some of you) to the Denver area. I was just completing my first year of retirement from Environmental Health work and was pretty well into the groove of delivering RVs for Gulfstream out of Nappanee, Indiana, If the runs were a thousand miles or less, I would tow my Jeep, usually if more than that, I would fly back. Denver was just around the 1000 mile mark from Celina, so I decided to tow the Jeep out and drive it back...after all it was the middle of Summer, the Wrangler had A/C, and I figured a drive from the Rocky Mountains through the plains of Kansas towards the Mississippi River, would be enjoyable. A night in a motel outside St.Louis in southern Illinois, would make for a quick run to Ohio the next day.
As I headed across I-70 through Indiana, towards Indianapolis I began to encounter some heavy storms and downpours which made the Jeep rock and roll....I called home on the cell phone, and Patricia told me that the area was under a flood and thunderstorm watch...no surprise to me, especially given the conditions I was driving through. I made it to US 127 between Indy and Dayton, and headed north the final 50 miles to home. As I neared Greenville, the lightning was performing some real highlights in the night sky...the rain was torrential, to say the least. The bolts were coming down mighty close to the rag topped vehicle, and I have to tell you, riding on rubber or not, those bolts were not, as close as they were hitting, a pleasant sight.
I finally made it to the village of North Star, midway between Celina and Greenville. The rain was coming down so hard, I finally pulled over in the gas station/convenience store on the north end of town. The electricity was out, but the generator was kicked in and providing some light, there were 3 other people inside, and a car with another next to the pumps...they greeted me, and we waited out the next 15 minutes of the heavy storm. The rain slowed some, and I figured it was time to make that last 20 minute run to Celina. I finally made it home about Midnight...and as I mentioned in an earlier post this week...we spent the night hauling water up the basement steps, for the first and only time our basement actually flooded. A pump was purchased the next day...last weekend was the first time since then we have used it.
Tan Son Nhut, Monsoons and Lightning____
I transferred from Nha Trang Air Base on the South China Sea, to the massive compound at Tan Son Nhut(Saigon) just after Christmas back in 1969. I had worked day shift Law Enforcement at Nha Trang...when I arrived at TSN, they put me in security, C Flight Security to be exact. Meaning I would patrol the flightline, hunker down in bunkers, and work the tall security towers of Echo Sector and other locations overnights until March of 1970, when I was put back into Law Enforcement on Blue Flight. One night in February of 70...I was trucked out to a perimeter tower on the deep edges and remote section of the base. It had been raining hard most of the day....the Monsoons were in full force. One thing about Vietnam, unlike the United States, there were few thunderstorms...yes there were some dandy's...but not in the same numbers as we have here. The rains however, during the Monsoon season were something to behold.
Anyway, on this night, I was dropped off at that remote "short" tower. Armed with my M-16, .38 police special, duffel bag of rain gear, two way radio, plus AM/FM to listen to AFVN, the music coming out of that station, and box of C Rations, I was prepared to wait out the storm hunkered down in the open air tower...sure they had a roof, but open "windows", and if the wind was blowing, your were going to get wet....9 hours of rain awaited me this night. Rain I counted on, a Lightning Show, I was not!
I had settled in for the long night in the rain....let me tell you, 8 hours in a cold, wet, tower, was conducive to staying awake, no matter how tired you might be. I was a few hours into my nightly tour, when the first lightning bolts appeared. Here I was in a metal tower, with nothing to protect me from this electrical storm, except a metal roof...some protection! There were several SP's killed in Vietnam by lightning strikes on towers...I didn't plan on being one. I was thinking about that, and what move to make, when the next strike occurred...hitting the barbed wire on the perimeter fence. Maybe 50 yards in front of my eyes...'SHIT' I thought to myself..."What the Hell am I going to do now"? No fool was I....I didn't mind staying in that tower, fighting off the VC or NVA if I had to(which I never had to)...that was my job. I wasn't about to die in this God forsaken hole by getting fried by a bolt from above, at least not if I could help it.
So, I pulled the rain gear over my body...packed the radios in the bag, and climbed down out of that tower...against the rules? Sure, but it would not be the first or last time I broke some military law or rule...it was my speciality through my 3 year 10 month Air Force Career. Taking off my Helmet(Piss Pot as we called ) made of metal...I made my way across the perimeter road and hunkered down in the ditch. Snakes? Rats? Bugs? Hell I didn't care...I was more comfortable with them than I was in that tower, with those bolts from Heaven or Hell coming down...it rained throughout the night.
I have seen many a rain storm in my 62 years(in 12 days) on this earth...but those two are without a doubt the ones that scared the bravado out of me.....
The weekend awaits...enjoy!

Photos-A lightning Bolt strikes north of Celina...I captured this photo back in the Summer of 1997...one of the few lightning strikes I have captured on film. Me, decked out in the usual outfit at Tan Son Nhut, during the months I worked C Flight Security...February 1970. An a couple of photos of the towers at Tan Son Nhut...some tall, some not so tall...usually the hardest part of working the towers...was staying away, not so that Monsoon night in 1970. The next photo is of our compound and barracks at the 377th Security Police Squadron, TSN, Vietnam, and finally a couple of C-130 cargo planes sit getting a nature's bath during the Monsoons at Tan Son Nhut sometime during early 1970.

Gas Prices UP, Oil Prices Down(?)...Flood Waters DOWN, about to go UP,Stock Market stays UP(aka the fake economic upswing)
One thing for sure, the news on the Internet is all over the place.....
My wife called on her way to work this morning..."Gas up to $3.50 per gallon"..."No surprise" I say. The Wall Street speculators, along with Barry Boy Obama are in cohorts to drive the price of oil up....and drive down the economy of this republic. It's been his and the Puppet Master, George Soros's plan from day one of this failure of a human being/President. If you fail to see this, and want to continue to blame the evil oil companies or Bush...you are a gawd damn fool! Yes, big oil is out to make massive profits, but if they run the country's economy into the ground, how's that going to work out for them? Just asking!

On one hand we keep hearing about the great economic recovery...{anybody want to bet?} On the other we keep hearing about gas prices going through the roof{Obama's plan since his beginning}, while unemployment is "down" to 9%{once again, wanna bet?}....and then there is the Stock Market:
http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=^DJI
Let me say a couple of things...(1) I'm hardly a financial genius...if I was I'd be in one Hell of a lot better financial shape than I am. (2) It doesn't take a genius to know that the Obama Administration and it's co~whores on Wall Street are keeping the Market up...it sure the Hell isn't the so called "Improving Economic Outlook", because it isn't(Improving).
This economic mess is just going to get worse before/ if, it ever gets better. The dollar in time will be as worthless as teats on a boar hog....
More flooding rains on the way?
As the economic outlooks falls and/or rises, depending on who you choose to listen to....the waters in west central Ohio are receding for now....sad to say, that probably will only last through tonight. The latest forecast is calling for 3 or more inches of rain between late tonight and early Saturday night. If this happens, we will be in for another round of flooding. The St. Marys River, still in a flood stage will present problems from Mercer, Ohio, to Fort Wayne, Indiana, with Decatur on the Hoosier side, and Rockford and Willshire on the Buckeye side in for the worst of it. Meanwhile, if we get those predicted flooding rains, the Grand Lake Spillway will push the Beaver Creek and Wabash River out of their banks as they reach west from Celina to the Indiana state line, some 12 miles west of here.
The next 48 hours will be critical....I am scheduled to get Sam's car back to him in Columbus on Saturday, then attend a wedding reception in St. Marys that night....hopefully I won't need a boat to do both.

Flood Waters..."To Recede or Not to Recede"? And memories of Ford Falcons
The sun came out brightly yesterday. After a cold start, in the upper teens, the sun brought the afternoon temperatures to the lower 40s, which put a dent in the piles of ice and snow that had been plowed into small mountains on the various street corners around town. The warm temperatures and rains had melted the ground snow, but it will take a while longer to get rid of the ice mounds.
The flood waters are gone from the streets of Celina, leaving some basement and low level damage, as well as the sticks, mud, and debris on the streets and parking lots of town....the city street machines were out and about cleaning that off the various roadways yesterday. After I dropped daughter Anissa off at the Cheryl Ann building, I headed over the Mercer Residential Services to check on the damage on the buildings located in the far south part of town. Not as bad as it could have been....both the Adult Day Care Center and the Assisted Living quarters had suffered some water damage, but lucky for us it was confined to the carpets, or at least that is what it appeared to be. Garry had the wind machines rented, drying the stench and water from the east sides of the buildings, where most of the water had settled. The insurance adjusters were on their way...and it appears the staff will be looking to relocate the Day Care to another building until the repairs/replacing of carpets can be done.

Once done there, I drove to the south to see what roads were open...and then to the West Bank Road on Grand Lake, to check out the massive flow of brown water, ice, and sticks, going over the Spillway to the Beaver Creek, flooding into the various farms and roads on it's way towards the Indiana state line and the mighty Wabash River....from a bird's eye view, it appears that the waters are receding, but the forecast, after today and tomorrow's sunny skies, will turn wet...Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, are all calling for rain, with the rain changing to snow on Sunday. How much and how fast it comes will affect the rivers and streams big time...as well as the ice melt, which will continue on Grand Lake.
Baseball Beckons____
I picked up a couple of scrimmage games at Delphos yesterday....whether any of the early season high school games or scrimmages get played is always "iffy"...this year, with the heavy snow, and late winter rains, even more so. But you take the contracts and hopefully get out a couple of times before the season begins in full through April and early May. High school baseball is the shortest of seasons...unless you are lucky or good enough to get selected for Tournament Games...so far, at least the past few seasons, I have been working to and through late in the tournament season. June sees summer ACME(high school summer baseball) and American Legion games, July the tournaments in those levels begin...so what seems like a short season, usually ends up going 4 or 5 months, and you are ready for it to end. All in all however, baseball, like it was to play in my youth, is by far my favorite sport to officiate. So, needless to say, I am ready for it all to begin.
Sam's Nissan____
The shop called and Sam's Nissan was fixed and ready for pick up....as I suspected, the Alternator was shot, and the connecting belts needed replaced as well. Add a much needed oil change, and the final total was $450.17. It could have been worse...alternators certainly are not like the days of my early driving back in the mid to late 1960s. If an alternator went out on one of my Ford Falcons, I, even being a total dolt when it came to car repairs, could pull the old out, get a new or rebuilt one for $29.95 and replace it, with nothing more than a screwdriver in hand. Of course having an old man who was a mechanic and owed or operated a service station for most of my early life, didn't hurt. I remember blowing up the engine in my 1962 Falcon...let the damn oil light come on and tried to drive it the 5 miles from work in Celina home to Montezuma...didn't make it! I was working at Marsh Supermarket during my Senior year at Celina High School...one day after the engine blew, I received a refund check from the Government a grand total of $135...Dad picked up a rebuilt Ford 6 banger for the same price, and "poof" my check was gone, and the Falcon was back on the road...Damn, those were the good old days!
A 1960 Falcon was my second car, following a 57 Fairlane, I followed those with the 62 Falcon, by far the favorite car of my youth, before moving on to the Chrysler and Mopar vehicles. I tore em' up, and dad would fix them....like I said, "Damn, those were the good old days"...what I wouldn't do to go back and visit that time, if just for a little while. Sure the war beckoned, political correctness had reared it's ugly head, and the country would slowly but surly slide down the crapper, to what it has become today, but that snapshot in time, had some great memories. Those days of the middle and late 1960s, were indeed "the good old days"....never to be matched again in this lifetime.

Photos-top left...The Grand Lake Spillway, as the water peaks and flows into the Beaver Creek, on it's way to the Wabash River....note the ice on the lake in the background of the top photo...lots of ice and with this weekends predicted rains, the worst may not be over. Me, umpiring a summer tournament game a couple of years ago...and a 1962 Red Ford Falcon, much like the one I had in my High School Daze....6 cylinder with a "Mystery Shift" 3 speed on the floor.

Rising Flood Waters, Black Outs, and Record Numbers for PRH.... March in like a Lion?
After I finished writing yesterday's post, very late Sunday night and very early Monday morning....I looked at the clock and it read 1:05(am)...I finished a last glass of Guinness and looked out the landing window...the predicted rains had began to come down in force. Straight down and heavy. I decided to check the basement for water. Our basement, the first part of the house/parsonage to be constructed, was built in November 1923, and remains much like it was back 87 years ago....unfinished, but useful. Washer, Dryer, weight room, my shower, freezer, a TV with cable, antiques, my clothes rack, etc. Old and cold, it's a great place to escape to and drink a beer in the summer, watch football on occasion in the fall, work out, store my cigars, family history items, and store our "Armageddon" supplies. It's where I have taken all but a handful of showers, usually 2 a day, since we moved in nearly 16 years ago. The wife and Anissa always used the upstairs bath, the boys and I usually took care of our needs in the basement...a guy thing I guess. Even with the mostly empty next...I still escape to the basement on a daily basis.
The basement during heavy rains gets some water, but only once was it a major a problem...that came during the 4 days of heavy thunderstorms during the July 4th holidays of 2003. On the night I returned from Denver, after delivering a RV, the rains were like I had not seen since the Monsoons in Vietnam...the basement took on water, and we spent much of the overnight, Patricia, Hal, his friend Jake, and me, carrying buckets of water up the basement stairs and dumping them in the driveway which ran to the street in front. Being one of the highest points in Celina, we never needed a pump, and probably would not have that night, if the city had not done some "drain work" which caused a backup. We purchased a electric pump the next morning...and since that day we never needed to use it...until early Monday(yesterday) morning.
I awoke about 3am, walked down to the basement again, and the water on the east end near the washer/dryer(which are up a couple inches on slab blocks) was a few inches deep...time to plug in the pump, which had not been used in over 7 years...we cleaned off the cobwebs, and place it in the standing water...worked like a charm, and within a half hour the only wetness was confined to the surface of the floor. On the way back upstairs I once again peeked out the landing window...Livingston Street towards the east was receiving flooding waters, at least 2 or 3 feet deep...our neighbors cars, at least a couple of them, were in danger of getting some serious water damage. As I said, our house sits on the high end of the area, with the slopes that move downward both east towards City Hall and the Courthouse and west towards the City Pool and the County Fairgrounds...we stayed dry for the most part.
The schools, except Patricia's at St. Henry, were all cancelled, they stuck with a 2 hour delay. The city streets drained well and by afternoon, and the only remains of thje flooding in town were the debris in the streets and yards...Grand Lake and Beaver Creek and the flood plains were another story....
The combination of 3 inches of overnight rains, and a foot of melting ice and snow in the 55 degree weather was a prescription for disaster...both the flow north to the St. Marys River(closed at route 127) where it heads towards Willshire, Ohio, and Fort Wayne, Indiana, and the flow from Grand Lake's West Bank Spillway, where it flows into Beaver Creek on it's way to the Wabash River, were in full force. The lake had a major ice cover this winter, and that melt combined with the rain has the potential of making this the 3rd 100 year flood in the past 10 years...so much for climatology....?
The spillway was pouring quickly into the Beaver and the water was within 6 inches of the small bridge at US 127...once past that point, the Beaver had left it's bank and was flowing into the south side of town and into the fields as it headed west, albeit out of it's banks, towards the Wabash and Indiana. The reports say it will reach it's peak sometime later today...with the sun shining bright, at least the rain will stay away and what little snow is left, won't have a negative effect on the already sodden grounds. Sad to say our Mercer Residential Services building, which also houses the Adult Day Services which Anissa attends 3 hours per day, was flooded out on the south side of town. The building, just a handful of years old, will need some major cleaning and repair....not sure what the total damages might be...but Anissa, for the foreseeable future, will be spending those few hours in the morning with me at home, until she heads to the workshop at Cheryl Ann at Noon. I'm on the Board of Directors at MRSI, and we will have some decisions to make, regarding the repairs and how to prevent them in the future.
Black Out____
With no moonshine, without artificial lighting the only lights would be the Radio and Cell phone towers that beam out their red and white lights....at 10pm last night Celina went black. I was standing in the kitchen, Patricia had already headed for bed....I was conversing with youngest son Hal on the cell phone, when blink, the lights went out. I mean out! Not just a section of the city of 11,000, but the entire town went black. It was a surreal look...no street lights, no traffic lights, nothing but a few cars that were on the streets. Patricia got up, we grabbed a couple of flashlights and got out the candles, and that was it for about 45 or 50 minutes. I had not seen such complete blackness since our nights on the mushroom hunts in the woods near Mesick, Michigan, in the spring of each year.
The radio stations in town provided no answers, because they to, were blank. off the air for the duration....I turned into a Chicago Blackhawks game out of a Chicago station and waited...the neighbors had flashlights, I looked out the front windows and saw a few houses with candlelight as well. Then at 10:45 the lights came back on as quickly as they had went off...I suspect the flooding had something to do with it...but so far, no word from the powers that be.

I started on this blog a little over 3 1/2 years ago...basically as a diary of sorts to replace my daily writings to paper....a year later I signed up with sitemeter, just to see how many, if anybody, was stopping by. February, being the shortest month, you would not think would contain a record number of visitors or pages viewed. That however proved not to be the case this month just past. 4047 visits and 6500 page views my sitemeter showed this morning:
http://www.sitemeter.com/?a=stats&s=s10airedale
It beat the old record set in November of last year...topping those numbers by some 400 visits and nearly a thousand page views...I do appreciate it. I reach 950 posts in those 3 1/2 years with today's writing.
March, in like a lamb?
Mid 40's and sunshine they say for today....not exactly "Lion Like" for the first day of March...a bit cooler tomorrow, and more rain in the forecast for the weekend. I am sure we will get more than a few lion like days before this month, when I turn SS age on March 16th, is finished. High School baseball season is set to start, as the basketball tournaments heat up...right now I cannot imagine any outdoor baseball activity getting in...the grounds have a long way to go before they begin to dry, and the extended forecast does not look promising.
Regardless, March is the change over month from Winter to Spring...and it is here. I, for one, am looking forward to it....outdoor activity will pick up, the snows will end(except for an occasional flurry in April), and baseball season will indeed begin....my first regular season game is slated for March 28th...just under four weeks from now. I am ready...except for the lawn mowing and garage cleaning that is sure to follow the improving weather.
