Moab Part #5...Mel's Diner and Mel's Ride

Slid in another game last night, meaning I have got 6 of 8 in so far....despite the weather.  Things don't look good for the rest of April however, calling for rain of some sort for 20 or so of the final 23 days of the month...a hit in the paychecks looms, but I learned long ago, never to count my games before they begin....tonight here is Celina, and even with the artificial infield, I have doubts if this one is gonna happen.

Part # 5 , Mel....

Our oldest rider at Moab was Mel, a 70 something veteran rider from San Luis Obispo, California....Mel, his two TWs and RV were parked out in the North Camp, some 20 miles, more or less, from our KOA sort on the south side of Moab...Mel was limited to  riding due to an old right arm and hand injury, but he did ride a bit, and was instrumental in keeping the north side crew fed, and we south siders joined him on a couple of occasions as well.....Mel knows how to toss out a feast....

After our ride to and up the Kane Creek Rim on Tuesday, our plans included some old fashion grade A steaks cooked on the outside grill, along with fixins' at Mel's RV site ....the meat was as good as it gets, a few beers to wash it down, along with salad and sides, made this the best food of the trip, and that is to say nothing bad about the few meals we had at the KOA and downtown Moab....those were excellent as well, but Mel's steaks and spaghetti, a couple of nights later, were special.

After a few hours breaking bread with the north side group, we headed back to the KOA....it had been decided that Wednesday would be "Mel's Ride"....as Mel himself said his riding would be limited, but he would lead the way....another trip up Kane Creek Road and Rim were in order....I decided I would ride as far as Mel, and head back to Moab...Nick, it seems, was in no hurry to climb the steep cliffs and agreed to head back with Mel and me.

We, a dozen and more of us, decided to meet at the Moab McDonald's at 10:30 in the morning, and head to the rim from there...

Taking the paved road along the creek side the way Fred, Kurt, and I, had done the day before, we  proceeded into the slicken dirt roads, across a couple of small water crossings, and finally stopping for a group photo before the rest of the gang headed up the trail from the day before with my close calls and "Betty Boop's" demise...Mel, Nick, and I, would head back to the McDonald's for a long talk about riding, families, and life, as the rest headed into the cliffs, dirt, and rocks, where they would ride for several more hours...after our chat with Mel and a cup of coffee, Nick and I headed to one of the local watering holes for a couple of craft brews and a bite to eat.

Eddie's was a place we frequented while at Moab:

http://www.eddiemcstiffs.com/

While the riding was short for me that Wednesday, the beers and the weather remained pretty well perfect....another day in the 70s and plenty of sun, with no rain, just like the rest of the 8 days .... outstanding!

Frankly I'm not sure what I did the rest of the day Wednesday....but mostly back at the KOA Cabin and I enjoyed the sunshine and a few beers, this I know for sure.

Tomorrow....Part #6  Solo Ride

Photos-Top Mel with suspenders, overseeing the campfire, and checking out Fred's Nuts Award while the steaks were cooking on the grill...(2) The Required Group Photos arriving at the stopping off point for Mel's Ride....Mel, Nick, and me, would head back the rest would get some serious riding in....(3) BSing around the North Camp Fire, as Mel fixed the meal...(4) Looking over Mississippi Dan's{or is it Louzeeanna Dan} large gas tanked TW....and at the McDonald's in Moab(5)....Kurt checking out Fred's Kamikaze Head Gear....

Moab Day #4 on a ride, a fall, close calls, and Betty Boop Goes Down part #4

I hope all had a great Easter Weekend...I enjoyed it with most of the family, including the Grandsons, Kasyn and Kamdyn....we will get to watch them this coming weekend as mom and dad attend a convention in Columbus.

Also I got a double header in on Saturday at Paulding, with more rain beginning later today and lasting through the week, the games may be few and far between for the next week to 10 days....speaking of Baseball, the Big Red Machine, the Cincinnati Reds begin the regular season today with the traditional opening day at Great American Park.   Go Reds!

Tuesday, March 24th at Moab, 3 on a Ride!

On our 3th full day at the KOA Moab we awoke unsure how we would pair out or who would even ride....Weasel and Brian, the youngest riders, both had bike issues from the day before, and would be working on those....Paul would rest his back from the Sunday Fall, and Nick had decided to take the day off as well....the boys from New York would ride elsewhere, minus Brian, so that left veteran riders, Fred and Kurt, to drag me along the Kane Creek Canyon Road....which would start paved out of Moab City, and run along the creek up into the Canyonlands, where a couple of small streams, a slick rock road, and stone,  gravel, and sand would await...I would go farther than I planned, had one call too close for comfort, and one TW lay down which would leave me a wheel base short of disaster....

As Fred reached the first overlook{excuse me while I forget the name} I figured "OK, this is good enough for me, the next portion looks like something I promised myself to avoid"...that being a thin trail along side the edge...some sections as narrow as 6 or few feet wide, and with vehicles coming the other way....even less than that.....

However, I didn't have time to think about it, as Fred and his TW "Betty Boop" were gone, and without thinking, I followed...Kurt followed me, until we can upon a young driver in a full sized pick up with haul trailer hitched to the truck....I stopped, the truck stopped, leaving us about a foot to 18 inches between the edge of eternity on the right and the truck and trailer on our left....Kurt led the way, just edging by, I hesitated and said to myself "Screw it" and told the truck driver...."Don't Move"...and I slid by on the right, trying not to think about what was on my right....

{later in the day, after returning to the KOA, I thought to myself...IF I had to do that again, I would not likely have made the pass by the truck....but what was done was done}...

Kurt let me pass, while Fred and Betty rode up ahead....after a few miles of rocks, small ledges, gravel, and some sand, I saw Fred ahead ride over some slick rock, as I look ahead, my Michelin front  tire caught in some reddish dirt/sand...the 2014 hit some slick rock and slid into some more Red "Sand"....I was left with two choices....ride the TW down over an 8 foot fall into some rocks below....which was going to hurt both me and the TW...or lay it down, quick thinking on my part, and I pushed the bike down...sliding into the sand, the TW's rear wheel was hanging over the edge, my knee hit hard on the bike, but safe both me and the 2014 were.

Kurt came up behind, stopped his ride, and did the majority of work, pulling the TW off the edge, while I limped around and proclaimed to myself in silence, just how damn lucky I was to still be basically uninjured.

Shortly after my fall, I heard the ping of a Motorcycle, and see Fred and his Betty come back from where they disappeared .... looking for me and Kurt.

I heard a "ping" that sounded like a engine low on oil or about to blow.....making a long story short...Betty was in trouble, a broken bolt a loss of engine oil, and we knew we had reached our highest point, elevation wise, for today....

Lucky for Fred and Betty, a family riding a couple of Quads, had extra oil as Kurt hailed them down....and after a quick repair by Fred and Kurt{clueless as I am} and oil fill Up...Fred decided to "limp" back to camp....funny part was, his "limp" still made it back to Moab and the KOA, well ahead of Kurt and I, and we stopped for a couple of beers in town.  However Betty was finished for Moab, and Fred would spend the next few days getting to ride other people's TWs.....he still got around more than most of us.

The trip back, now knowing the route, was much more smooth for me...and I actually got to enjoy the ride, although no more photos were taken....Close Calls or Not....I put this day as favorite day #2 on my list of 7 days of rides...

Later than evening we would head back to the North Camp for Mel's Cooking...some of the finest Steaks over an open flame you would find....that story and Wednesday's Ride coming up:

{Next up: Mel's Diner and Riding the Kane Creek Road again, this time it was Mel's Ride}

back later>>>>>

Photos-Overlook about half way up Kane  Creek Rim Road, Me stopped in front of some Big Rock, heading up the Rim Road....Betty Injured and Me Down Spot...and Fred, smiles and all, works to repair Betty Boop....but eventually to no avail, at least for this trip.

Moab Part #3 Riding the Potash

Over an inch of rain fell yesterday, needless to say it washed out the scheduled games and thus my ankle a chance for some rest.....today looks "iffy" as well and colder for tomorrow...so the real possibility is that I will have until at least Monday to rest....with next week looking wet from Monday Night through Friday, this could be one of those Springs....50% of games cancelled, does not bode well for my beer and gas tank support...but I have come to expect it.

In addition to the ankle and arm tendon, the off and on Cold  continues to batter me....I'm not sure if it is the same one I acquired the week prior to Moab, or a continuation or combination of 2 or 3 of them...either way, for someone is who seldom sick, this past few weeks has sucked, Health Wise....but that does not take away from the good riding and times at Moab, Utah the last week of March.

The Potash Ride, Monday, March 23, 2015.....

After getting off to a spilling and falling start on Sunday, I was not sure what was in store for Monday....it was decided to ride a road{of sorts} to the Island in the Sky, past a Potash Plant...it was a weaving winding path combined of slick road, paved routes, gravel and sand, which would end several thousand feet above with a winding 5 miles or so where we would exit the Canyon...the Potash/Shafter Trail is combination, and although the last few miles up and out, were a challenge, I enjoyed the ride, with 8 or 10 others....and when arriving at the top, I was happy as a clam to have made it out.....we took the paved roads back, and despite losing 2 riders, The Weasel and young Brian to bike issues, I counted this day, No spills and getting out alive as a success ....

The "Payoff Dinner".....

One of our TW Forum Fellow Travelers, who is Mr. "Iron Butt" himself, having logged nearly 2 million miles on Street and Dirt, from Washington State, made me a friendly wager last winter on the Ohio State vs Oregon National Football Title game....dinner at Moab it would be....since the Buckeyes took home the crown, Mike aka "Doc" aka TWilight, payed off Monday Night{I think but the days slipped by leaving a blur}....so Mike picked the Blu-Pig BBQ:

http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-blu-pig-moab

Some 20 of the gang showed up and the meal was indeed great, including the American Dark Lager BaBa Black Lager I downed...Thanks Again Mike....we will see how our NFL Bet turns out for next season...and the future rides.

http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1416/73965/

So here we were, one good/great day of riding and eating, after the not-so-great beginning on Sunday...batting .500, not so bad, I figured....I didn't know what the next day would bring, riding wise, but it again turned out to be a mixed bag....where I game close to disaster, not once but twice....and Tuesday would indeed put a challenge on my "fear of heights" mindset.

Back Later{probably will continue this on Monday}....

Photos-....The Road to the Top...our crew came from the left branch, and worked out way to the top via the "road" as you see it....{2} At the beginning, I was happy to have made it the first couple miles, little did I know what was in store for the next couple of hours.(3)Nick, was happy to have made it that far as well....(4)Reaching the top....had to get one great photo, and I did just that{you can see the trail below and in back of me}...(5)Dinner, mine was free due to a bet, at the Blu Pig in Moab....and below, 6, 7, 8, more views on the way.....Monday I declare a "Success".....

The Moab Adventure Rides Part #2

Here it is Thursday, 4 days back from the Dual Sport Adventure Rides at Moab, Utah....3 games worked, baseball umpiring-wise, ankle still sore and swelling after games....it needs rest, but I will need the rain{which is predicted} to give me that....the knee is back to 66 year old "normal", and my right arm tendon is still sore....my weight lifting routine, already on hold from Utah, will not be in the future for sometime to come...no matter how good of shape one thinks they are at 66, once injured, time is required for the healing process.....but I am not complaining.

Baseball is slated for tonight at Delphos St Johns, against their cross town public school rival Delphos Jefferson....the rain may put a stop to that, and the game I have scheduled for Good Friday at Miller City is in serious doubt as well....the ankle is hoping for some rain and relief...the brain hates rain outs and working in cold weather....last night was perfect at Fort Jennings, I worked the plate with my District Partner, Ed O....and the sun and 65 was enjoyable.

Sunday March 22, 2015...

After our first night in the tiny 2 room KOA Cabin, 4 of us, me, Kurt, The Weasel, and Nick, along with our Phoenix KOA Neighbor, Paul the "Z-Diver" and the Jim "Ebbenflow" gang from PA, headed into town for a Sunday Breakfast at the "Jail House" cafĂ©....a good breakfast, but the prices were a bit steep, and the wait was about a half hour....Mini Marathon going on in Moab, and the streets were crowded.

Once finished there we prepared to head to the "North Camp" some 19 miles up highway 191 from us...that is where Ron from Boise, Mel, Admiral, his wife, and Plumstraight, were gathered, along with Mississippi Dan, and the 3 Larry's were gathered, Ebbenflow Jim from Pennsylvania, and his buddy and nephew would join us north as well....along with several others....including my buddy Doc Mike{TWilight} from Washington State, who owed me a meal for the OSU Buckeyes knocking off his Oregon Ducks in the NCAA FB Title Game....the payoff would be delicious....

Anyway after the first greetings, somebody talked a few unsuspecting fools{that would be me and Nick} into riding the flat sandy lands around the north camp....not speaking for anybody but me, this was my first{but not last} riding mistake of the week...Z-Diver, Nick, and I, all took several spills....my two, caused by sand and not knowing how to handle that, ended up with my ankle being stuck between sand and TW, and it has not been the same since....although the injury did not affect my riding....it did and still does affect my walking, but the riding was not a problem, at least not from the ankle.

Z-Diver Paul fell over backward and injured his back and ribs, but lived to ride the rest of the week, Nick, although not seemingly injured from his sandy spills, was gassed from the heat...and Kurt wisely decided to end the first day of riding....a lesson learned by all....

We escaped back to the KOA, then into Moab Town, where we would hit a few bars and the other 4 would eat Mexican....I would stay at one of the bars and down some local brews and watch the NCAA Tourney Games on CBS....

Tired, sore, but more than satisfied, the first full day was in the books....and tomorrow would be my favorite day of the 8 at Moab....as we rode the Potash and I reached the top for some great views and photos...

back tomorrow, Potash/Island in the Sky part #3

Photos-top to bottom...Showing off one of the T-Shirts I purchased for me and family in my Den.....The North Camp where we got our start on Sunday and were Mel{far left white shirt} fixed some great meals during the week. Me, already down to shirt in the heat, one spill down, one painful one to go....24 year old Spencer{aka: Weasel} who saved my bacon on a couple of occasions this first full day....great kid, excellent rider....and left to right, Weasel, Nick, Z-Diver Paul, and Borneo Kurt, sipping a cold one downtown Moab, after our first {somewhat} full day of riding...

Back From the Moab Adventure....part 1

OK....we made it back last Sunday, March 29, 2015 from our Moab Adventure, which began with plans back in November and got started on Thursday March, 19th....

The Final Toll....3 falls, one sprained right ankle, one stretched out right arm tendon, and a bruised right knee....the "right side" took a beating.  Meanwhile the "t-dub" is mighty dirty with red sand and dirt, and has a broken weld between seat and "Man~Rack"....not sure how that happened, but my guess is, when I took my 3rd and most dangerous fall, a hard one at that, the fuel rotopack snapped the weld...Nick will be working on that...and it should be no problem getting it back to normal.  All-in-all, despite the injuries, the falls, the light damage, and the damn head cold returning, I survived it all....with a few regrets{not many} and some good memories, along with a better idea of what a 66 year old can and can't do these days.

Thursday March 19th,  Friday March 20th, and Saturday March 21st...

Nick and I had already taken our TWs over to Kurt's Rural Ranch earlier in March, so we loaded up the rest of our "stuff" and headed the 70 miles north and east to near Auburn, Indiana, early Thursday afternoon...Kurt had already taken off the afternoon, but his brother had stopped by, so we spent most of the afternoon downing a few{or more} beers, before crashing in his "Barn"{anything but} for a few hours sleep....his wife, Miss Margaret, had fixed up breakfast and we were on the road to Utah by 6:15 Friday AM.

Kurt's nephew who we call "The Weasel", a good riding happy go lucky 24 year old who  has skills with motorcycles and life well beyond his years, would do the driving....the entire 1600 miles out and back....the rest of us played with I-Phones, farted, drank coffee, and bitched at each other on the way out.....we made it to the western Kansas town of Oakley by 9pm Friday Night, and stayed at decent motel, grabbed a few beers, a Subway for me, and Pizza for the other 3....

http://www.bing.com/maps/default.aspx?encType=1&where1=Oakley%2c%20Kansas&cp=39.1258201599121~-100.853782653809&qpvt=Oakley+Kansas&FORM=MIRE

Saturday morning, we were up before light, and headed across the flat lands of west Kansas and eastern Colorado in the direction of Denver...making good time, stopping for fuel(we would spend about $800 out and back for gas, a year ago we would have been socked for at least 1/3rd more}....we got to see the Ski Hills of that Yuppie Obama Loving Dump called Vail, in all it's more money than brains, glory....I liked to Ski in my younger years, but the Starbucks Sucking clowns that frequent the hills of snow are people I can do without....but we were by it in an instant, and on our way past towns I can relate to, like Parachute and downhill towards Grand Junction and the Utah Border...

We rolled through Moab mid afternoon, and 4 more miles to our home for the next week, the Moab KOA Campground.....our Cabin would be the 2 room 5 bed log home....we would spend as little time in the cabin, except to sleep, as possible, but it was much better than tent camping in the dirt....Half of the nearly 30 TW Riders would stay at KOA, the rest out north of Moab in the sandy flats.....if you should ever get a chance to stay a Moab, take the KOA or other such route and DON'T TENT CAMP....

Once signed in at the grounds....we unloaded the bikes, and headed into Moab for a look around.....grabbed some beers and the rest of Saturday was set....we would begin our riding, falling, and sight seeing on Sunday...

back with Part 2....The First Day/I Hate Sand

Photos-I survive the Ride to the Island in the Sky....Fog and Snow greeted us on our way out of Auburn, Indiana, on Friday Morning...our first stop was just west of Indy, one of many fuel and pee stops....and Saturday Afternoon we arrive at Moab KOA, our cabin, on the right K-18 would be home for the next 8 days...

Moab, Utah, Here We Come!

Less than 48 hours out from our long anticipated trip to the Desert Mountains of Eastern Utah and the Moab and Canyon Areas of the Western Front....this trip has been in the works since October, and it now appears that 30 or so of us, from Ohio, Indiana, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho, California, Washington State, and other areas will converge on the Mormon State.

The weather is looking perfect for the trip and riding...70s for highs most days, 30s and 40s overnight...and very little rain in the forecast, let's hope it holds.

Nick and I headed over to Auburn, Indian, on Monday,  taking some of our gear and with temperatures near 70 and some sun, we rode about 40 miles on the dirt and gravel roads around Kurt's
place, to finally get some quality riding time in on the TWs....afterwards we headed the 15 miles over to Rick Pearson's place and stayed for about 90 minutes and downed a couple of beers with our old High School buddy.....

So the time is nearing....and we head out for our 8 days of riding.  Hopefully the computer WiFi will be working at the Moab KOA and we can shoot some photos back as we progress.....

Edging towards Spring and Moab

The brutal winter weather has finally taken a break...plenty of fog, rain, and wet grounds abound, but it appears that the long string of snowy days and below zero temperatures are gone....at least for the foreseeable future.  Not that it won't dip into the teens for lows and many a few inches of snow will come and go, but the majority of winter appears to be past.

This means baseball{my first scrimmage is slated for next Monday the 16th, my 66th birthday} is near...I've already got my required number of local rules meeting finished, along with my state meeting online.  The Northwest District has already handed out many of the Sectional and District Assignments, and I have 6 games so far...three on the Sectional/District play-ins and the Coldwater D4 District as well...the 2nd time in three seasons I will work that quality district along with BG and Ed...the same guys that worked it with me in 2013...not often I work with guys with more experience than me....but in this case, they both do....I will also work the 3 District play-in games with BG, using a two-man crew.

Not sure if we will get any games in during the scrimmage portion next week, but regardless I will be heading out to Moab, Utah, for some Dual Sport Motorcycle Riding in the Desert Mountains around the National Parks in that area....Nick, along with a couple of guys from Auburn, Indiana, Kurt and his nephew, will drag us along to Utah, and we will join another 2 dozen guys from around the country{Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada, and California} for 8 days of camping and riding...about 2/3rd of us will be "camping" in Cabins at the Moab KOA...the rest will be doing tent camping, some 10 miles away...

We hauled the TWs over to Kurt's last weekend, and now all we need to do is make final plans and packing for the 1500 mile trip across the Rockies into eastern Utah.

Hopefully I will have plenty of adventure stories and photos to share when I return....back later>>>

Dartball Champions 2015

I started playing "Dartball" in the Wabash Valley Church League about 1990 when our oldest son Sam, then about 9 started to toss darts as the youngest member of the Celina St. John Lutheran team...I batted .286 that first season, and thereafter I hit anywhere from .300 to .500 over the next couple decades, made the All Star Team for all of those years, and won a boat load of trophies for League RBI to League Batting Average Champ...as our older players began to sadly, die off, I became the oldest member, age wise, on the team, but stayed competitive and actually finished 2nd in the league in RBIs last season{the top 3 average wise and RBI wise collect trophies, which in turn collect dust in my basement}.  This year, while still making the "all star" team, my average slipped to .294 with just 19 RBI's, the worst stats since my rookie season a quarter century ago...still finishing 3rd in stats, to yet make another all star contest, but approaching 66 I feel my ability slipping, at least on those night where I worked a Junior High Basketball double header before heading off to toss Darts.

In the 25 years since Sam and then I began tossing Darts at the baseball diamond board, we were, at least for the first 15 years, one of the better teams in the {now} 8 team league{down from the 12 church teams when I started}.  As our veterans slipped away or just got to old to continue, and some of the other top players got caught up in family and work obligations, our numbers dwindled and we teamed up with Celina First Church of God under our church and continued to play...younger kids without much dart knowledge joined and we have suffered, as has the league in general.  Over the past 25 years we had won the post season tournament a handful of times, came in runners up a few more.  As for the regular season, we were always, at least in those first 15 years I played, competitive, not so much the last 10 years....dropping down to the middle of the pack, sometimes lower...however, even with a couple of South Division Championships, we have not won the League Title in those 25 years since I started.....that all changed last night.

Our season started out winning a boat load of close games, so much so, we won the South Division's first half with a 14-7 record....the second half we reverted back to form, losing a lot of close games, finishing 8-13.  The first half championship gave us at least the opportunity to play 2nd half winner, Hopewell Township Lutheran, for the South title and the chance to play North Champs, Rockford Methodist{winners of both half seasons up north}.

We were quickly eliminated by Schumm Zion Lutheran in the Tournament opening round...but got the chance to use the same lighting and board against Hopewell in the South Title games.....frankly we stunk, but Hopewell was even worse, we came away with 2-1 and 2-0 wins.  Anybody that knows darts and dirtball will quickly realize that is some pathetic dart tossing...but a win is a win, and we took 2 of them and the South Crown, giving us a chance to play host Rockford, without a doubt the best team in the league this season.

Playing the best 2 of 3 for the title we really had little to lose, they had taken 4 of 6 from us during the season and were playing at home...the first game quickly started to get away from us, as we fell behind 4-0 after 2 innings.  Playing on this board and same lighting for the 3 straight time we were hitting, but just could not put a group together, and despite hits in every inning we still found ourselves down 6-3 going into the bottom of the 9th...after a quick out and the bottom 3 in the lineup coming up, things didn't look good, to say the least...I told the guys to "Go for Singles" so we could hopefully load the bases for our RBI leader JD{the only guy on the team who has been playing longer than me}...and the bottom of the order came through, 3 straight singles, gave our leading Batting Average guy, Tyler, a shot to tie it with a triple, first dart, hits the Orange "Out" and we are down to our last chance...JD gets two quick strikes and we are down to one..."Bang" he hit's a triple to tie the game at 6, leaving me with a chance to pull out an unlikely first game win...one dart nestles into the top of the First Base{single} white square and we come out a 7-6 winner to go up 1 game to none.

I drive in JD in the first inning of game #2 and we never trail pulling off a 7-3 victory and an unlikely Championship in League play...our first in over 25 years.

Despite a miserable season, by my standards, I finished last night with 5 hits in 11 at bats and 6 runs batted in, JD went 6 for 11 with 5 RBIs, but it was really the younger guys and the bottom of the order who came through with big hits at the right time....guys batting in the .160-.180 range had 5 and 6 hits each to set the RBI guys up, and thus giving us the long awaited title.

Next week I participate in my 24th all star games, along with JD and Tyler, both more deserving to say the least, and we finish things up on March 9th with a Banquet at Rockford Methodist....the end of Dartball Season, usually harkens the beginning of Spring...let's hope the next couple of weeks brings and end to this miserable cold spell, which has been with us since just before Christmas.

Roundball...Just About Done!

After Friday Night's game at Antwerp, I am left with a few nights of Basketball Officiating to finish off the long season....

Tuesday a Boys JV game vs rival Crestview, before the Varsity Contest between the #2 ranked Raiders and the Defending D4 Champion Crestview Knights....

Speaking of Quality Teams...

Celina Clinched a share of the WBL, they can win it outright next week with a win over Elida, as they defeated Kenton 76-48...the D2 8th ranked Bulldogs then slipped to 18-3 by losing 60-50 at the #3 and defending D3 state champion LCC T-Birds on Saturday 60-50...Celina looked like they were just not into the contest from the get go...despite playing another quality team...

The only thing keeping my from total "Cabin Fever" in this 2nd straight miserably long and cold winter, are Basketball and the upcoming Dual Sport Motorcycle Adventure at Moab.....

The Deep Freeze of 2014-2015 Continues...

After a pretty "normal" beginning of this winter, it has turned bitter since early in January....probably not as bad, at least the Grand Lake Region hasn't had the snow, as last year, but the second half of this winter, is as bad as last year, and is approaching getting worse....miserable it has become.

About -20 for a chill factor this morning, to go with slightly below zero "real" temperatures....this afternoon it may reach 7 or 8 above, but the winds will keep the chill factor well below zero, as I head to Elida to work a girls basketball game....back down to about 5 below tonight, and the only day of any "warm-up" in the near future, will be Saturday, but by that time we are looking at 5+ inches of snow...next week the temperatures take a tumble and will remain that way until at least the end of February.

Not to worry however, we are not alone.... the folks in the deep south are feeling it as well....North Carolina is in single digits today, Dayton Beach will not get out of the 40s and even Key West is slated to only reach 59...likely one of the coldest high temperatures on record...

Hey Al Gore and Obammy....Shove your Mad Made Climate Change/Global Warming straight up your asses.....

Heading for Moab Part #3

Much like last winter, it appears this one will last long and will contain brutal below normal temperatures, when all is said and done.  February has been pretty damn awful, temperature wise, and if the forecast for the next 2 weeks is any indication, there will be some record lows broken....nothing in the extended forecast to challenge the Groundhog's Prediction...and six weeks might be a bit of a low forecast.

Anyway, the Moab Region of Utah should be somewhat warmer when we arrive on March 21st...let's at least hope so....the 45 day forecast looks like they are expecting a wet first week of Spring, but I'm not buying anything as far out as 30 days...a week or two, perhaps, but not a month...the forecast is far too iffy to get myself concerned, at least not yet.

I did get on the TW on Saturday morning and rode out west of town on Fairground Road for a couple of miles...the temperature was 19 or so, and a light snow had began...it was still not bad, I was
dressed for the short run...Nick then picked me up,  and we took both bikes out to One Eye Concepts, to change out the stock tire....which frankly "Sucks" in off road areas...we both picked out Michelin T63s 130/80-18...a tire made for the rear of most dual sport and dirt bikes, but perfect for the larger tires and rims of the TW....not nearly as big and fat as the rear on the TWs, but large enough to put it's prints on the ground, and hopefully keep us upright.....Kurt suggested the tires and is putting the same on his ride...so I have someone to blame if this tire isn't what I need....{just kidding Borneo}.

So we are now 30 days out...and those 30 days are going to be cold and long back here in the Heartland....hopefully Mother Nature will be kind in the last week of March, at least in Moab.

In the meantime, I am left with a handful of basketball{regular season ends for me this week}
games...baseball meetings have began, and I am looking at just 2 scrimmages on March 16th and 18th, and looking at the forecast, I'm not betting the farm on getting those in....the regular season opener for me is slated for Monday March 30th.

Basketball Officiating...and Moab Part #2

We have pretty well got our dates down for the Moab Trip and TW Adventure Ride in Utah set...

Some time in early March, Nick and I will haul our TWs, my 2014, purchased new last March, with 600 miles on it, and his new 2015 purchased last week with still less than 1 mile on it...up to Kurt's place near Auburn, Indiana...not far from my buddy Rick's place outside LaOtto.  We plan to spend some time, perhaps, if the weather ever clears, doing some riding around his ranch, and maybe shoot some guns...for target practice, unless there are some unsuspecting, Obama loving Liberals around....{insert eye roll, just for shits and giggles}...

Once done there, we will wait another week and a half, while Kurt and his Nephew pack the goods and get the trailers ready for the trip...Nick and I will return the afternoon of the **th , spend the evening, and the four of us will head out the next morning for Moab, Utah.  We hope to arrive safe and sound the next afternoon{1500+ miles} if the vehicles and weather cooperate...you never know going across the plains in March and you especially never know going across the Rockies in late winter and/or early spring....once there we hope to enjoy good riding weather for 7 or 8 days before returning home in time for my Baseball Umpiring season to begin.

I will keep this updated as the big event approaches.

Basketball Officiating...the "End is Near"

Worked a Junior High Boys double header last night at Convoy Crestview, and I realized just how much I am beginning to dislike, maybe even hate, working basketball....I'm contracted out for two more seasons, but I am beginning to re-think that.

I got into basketball officiating, mainly to stay busy in the winter, and to stay in reasonable shape for my age{66 coming up next month}...it was never my favorite sport to play{I sucked at it}, or now, officiate....sure I enjoy college, if it's teams I favor, like Duke or Ohio State, and I was the play-by-play guy for the Van Wert Cougars for 20 years on Cable Channel 7, and held season tickets for Celina's Bulldogs for a number of years...but like golf, I never took it seriously...it was and always has been entertainment and little more.

Seems the lower the level, the more idiotic the fans and some coaches become....sometimes you would just like to climb into the stands and choke the shit out of some fool, for not knowing a gawd damn thing about the game, or rules, or realizing that at some levels, you just can't or won't call everything...if you did, the games would only end, when every player fouled out!

Anyway, 2 more weeks, then a weekend in early March of 5/6th grade games to keep me in shape...once I return from Utah, and Baseball begins, I will re-evaluate if I want to continue with Basketball or just stay with Football and Baseball....and frankly Football is next on the list to go...but we will see how the body holds out and that season, beginning in August goes.

In the meantime, I am ready for this roundball season to be gone...heading 75 miles north this afternoon, and working a Girls HS Game..??  What the Hell was I thinking when I took this contract???

March 2015...Heading for Moab{Utah}

As the long winter{not as cold nor as snowy as last year, at least not so far} continues, I and others from around the Midwest and Nation prepare to take our Yamaha TWs out west to the Moab Desert Region of eastern Utah.  As of last count, at least 22 of us, with the possibility of 30 or more, total have confirmed we will be riding the slow, steady, but mighty TW200s during late March out west.

Kurt, the Indiana Lawyer, his Nephew The Weasel, and my old buddy Nick, will be heading out as a foursome...while many will be tent camping in the hinterland, at least us four, plus others, will be staying at the Moab KOA Cabins just south of the city....tent camping in March, even in the Desert does not sound warm enough for me....

While Nick had originally planned on tagging along and riding a quad runner, we discovered space and cost were not in the best interest of that plan, so I finally talked him into looking at the TW, even though he had not ridden a Motorcycle in 40 years....finally after some searching, I called the Honda East folks at Toledo/Maumee, and Nick pulled the trigger on a brand new 2015, which he got a deal on that was as good or even better than the one I pulled off last March on a new 2014...

We picked it up a week ago last Wednesday, and that trip in itself was an "Adventure"...

Everything went smooth as silk on the way up, Nick made his deal, and we loaded up the silver and white 2015 and were on our way back down I-75 towards home when the adventures began....

First off a blown driver's side tire outside of Findlay....once AAA came to replace that with the spare, we headed back south, only to the weather rotted space give way less than a mile outside Bluffton...we limped into town and after a couple of stops, we found a tire shop who would put a new tire on and check the remaining tire...no damage done, and our 5 hour planned trip turned into more like 8 or 9, but we made it back to Montezuma, safe and sound, as did Nick's new TW...now we just need some riding weather before we deliver them to Kurt's before the trip west....

Moab should be a blast...and I, and especially Nick, will see if we can handle the dirt, sand, rocks, ledges, and narrow paths of the Mounting Desert....

Less than six weeks away, and video and still photos await if we survive this latest "Adventure", now in our mid 60s.....
