Friday/Hockey Night in America

I made the 60 mile north trip to Hicksville last night...it rained all the way, until I was 4 miles from the town...and it stopped. We ended up getting our GMC Varsity game in with visiting Ayresville coming out on top by a 12-3 score.....tonight's game for both Sam and I are already washed out by wet fields in Lima and Convoy....way too much rain for this time of year. Sectional Tournaments are slated to start tomorrow, although we may have another batch of rain overnight....I'm at Convoy for the Crestview Division 4 semi-finals, Sam meanwhile is down in Shelby County for a single game at Russia(pronounced Rue-She).

Tonight my Philly Flyers begin the Eastern Finals of the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs, on VS(TV) against Cindy Crosby and the Pittsburg Fem-Quens....old time hockey fans have to laugh at this team of whimps out of Pittsburgh, this is what modern day hockey has become...wonder what Dave "The Hammer" Schultz would think?:

or

Great old time Hockey from the 70s where the Broad Street Bullies were kings and everybody else was just pretenders...just ask the Soviet Red Army team when they came to Philly in 1976 and tried to play Euro Hockey with the Flyers....final Flyers 4 Pinkos 1...and that after the Soviet coach pulled his team off the ice, until the Flyer GM told him.."No Play, No Pay" and they went back in for their butt kicking, before a World TV audience.

2 you tubes on the game are here:

and

I still love NHL hockey today...but without a doubt it is not the same game...the NHL has tried to tame it down...and not for the better of the "sport". Even the NHL has turned PC.....the likes of the Broad Street Bullies will not been seen again....and we all are much the poorer for it.

Think I'll drop in some music videos for the weekend sometime tomorrow...

I first watched hockey when the USA beat Russia, wow, that was a long time ago.

I'm as much a fan of old time hockey as anyone (I have a virtual altar to Gordie Howe and Sid Abel...even though the only places I've seen 'em play are in old sports reels), but I don't miss the Broad Street Bullies and that particular style of hockey. Not at all.

The Ducks tried to resurrect the style and were successful at it... last year. This year? Not so much, what with going out in the first round. The skill players... i.e., Malkin, Crosby, Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Briere, and even Umberger... are MUCH more fun to watch, IMHO. Your Mileage MOST certainly May Vary... ;-)

Ancient times Charlie, when a true underdog won....but still good, and yep Buck, we will agree to disagree...I'll take the Flyers pounding their opponents, rather that Michelle Malkin "Cherry Picking" a goal because he didn't have the guts to take another hit...but hey, different strokes...and right now, the Pens style is up 1-0.

truely, my only experience of hockey was going to see Slap Shot in high school and loving the hell out of it. Would LOVE to have that on DVD now.
