The Game of the Season

Yesterday saw a rare dry Monday and today will mark the first Tuesday since March that has been suitable for high school games to be played....the rest of the week, including the start of the Sectional Tournament, look to be hit and miss....hopefully we can get some solid dry weather for the next few weeks until the OHSAA State games are done the first week in June. As it stands now, I have a Division 4 Sectional double header, with oldest son Sam, at Bascom, Ohio(Hopewell-Loudon High School) scheduled for Saturday. Then I go with a 3 man crew, the same partners, for 3 games in the Division 3 District at Elida...then the same 3, we go back to D4, for a Regional Semi Final at Patrick Henry High School near Hamler, Ohio, on May 28th....The wet weather could mix up that schedule however...time will tell. In between all of this, we still have to finish off the regular season, especially league games...and I still plan on getting some Mushroom Hunting done with Rick, Clint, and the boys, up near Mesick, Michigan, over Memorial Day Weekend...although my trip will be a day later and shorter than originally planned.

Yesterday I traveled north to Convoy, for a critical league game in the Northwest Conference, between perennial power, Crestview and visiting Delphos Jefferson. Crestview came into the game with no loses in the league, while Jefferson had one loss at Bluffton. This promised to be a good battle between two solid teams...it did not disappoint.

I umpired the plate and my veteran partner JS from Hicksville, Ohio, had the bases...JS is nearing 40 years umpiring the game at the High School level. The contest started out as a quick mover, which looked to be over in less than 90 minutes. With the score knotted at goose eggs, the home Crestview team pushed across a run in the 3rd with a passed ball, and a wild throw into left field...it remained 1-0 until the bottom of the 6th when the Knights scratched out another score making it 2-zip going into the 7th and final inning...we had played just about an hour at this time.
The 7th and final inning would take another 30 minutes.

The pitching was ruling this game as we entered the last inning....Jefferson, with 1 out managed to get a base runner, on a hard ground ball to 2nd base, that hit and ricocheted off the fielder, a quick toss resulted in a bang-bang play at first, and JS called the runner safe...the crowd and benches hooted the call, but safe he was on a close one...1 out later(making 2 outs), and another runner on base, brought the go ahead run to the plate...on a 1 ball 2 strike count, the big left handed batter his a towering fly ball into the wind...the wind was enough and the ball settled over the right center field fence, and the Wildcats were on top 3-2. Fast forward to the bottom of the 7th. After a dropped fly ball and a base hit surrounded by 2 outs...The Knight were down to their last gasp....runners on 2nd and 3rd with a 1-1 count, saw the Crestview hitter rip a line shot into left field, and both runners would score ahead of the throw, giving the home team a 4-3 win and a strangle hold on the league lead.

Friday, GM and I will be at Jefferson for a key game with (now) second place Columbus Grove....it will be hard to top the intensity and excitement of yesterday's contest.

Tonight I am at Lima Shawnee for a WBL game with St. Marys...Shawnee sit with 2 loses in league play and a loss will knock them out of the hunt...with Defiance on top and undefeated in league play, anybody will be hard pressed to catch the Bulldogs this season. After tonight we will play "dodge the rain drops" for the remainder of the week.

Patricia seemed to enjoy her birthday flowers, hopefully we can get out for a dinner sometime this week, that may depend on the weather and rain outs though....but it will happen.

Took the Lawn Boy into the shop for a rework and blade sharpening job...will give mom's mower double duty for the duration of the repair work.

Other than that, I plan on enjoying the rain free weather as long or short as it lasts....and will try to ignore the idiots in Washington and the media, especially the love affair with GE/MSNBC slobbering over themselves over our Marxist non-American born illegal President, Barry Soetoro...SHOW YOUR BIRTH CERTIFICATE BARACK, WHAT ARE YOU HIDING?
